An Argentine woman who was living in South Philadelphia<\/a> when she was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at Philadelphia International Airport last month <\/a>has been released and is on her way back to Philly, her boyfriend, Steven Mechiorre, said. <\/p>\n

Iliana Lick, 30, came to the United States from Argentina in 2023 on a tourist visa that was later extended. Her attorney said she was waiting for an asylum interview with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services when she was arrested on July 11 at Philadelphia International Airport.<\/p>\n

Her bond was set at $10,000 and she was released from a detention center in New Mexico on Monday, Aug. 10, Mechiorre said. Lick was staying at a hotel in El Paso on Monday night and was expected to fly back to Philadelphia on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

“While there is still one more step before she is finally home, today marks an enormous victory. For the first time in weeks, Iliana is no longer behind the walls of a detention center,” Mechiorre said. <\/p>\n

“I want to thank everyone who has stood beside us throughout this journey. Your prayers, messages, generosity, and support have carried us through some incredibly difficult days,” he added. “This is not the end of Iliana’s immigration case, but tonight we are celebrating an important milestone.”<\/p>\n

Lick’s immigration attorney, Ana Ferreira, said the arrest came as a surprise when she spoke with Telemundo 62’s Belen Smole earlier this month.<\/p>\n

“It is shocking. I’ve been doing this for 11 years and we never encountered anything like this before,” Ferreira said.<\/p>\n

Ferreira said people in circumstances similar to Lick’s had previously been able to travel domestically without incident but that she has recently seen more arrests like this.<\/p>\n

According to Ferreira, Lick “was never even one day unlawfully” in the United States.<\/p>\n

“She was doing everything that she could possibly be doing to try to remain in the U.S. lawfully,” Ferreira said.<\/p>\n
