READING, Pa. \u2014 One by one, fans walked through the gates of FirstEnergy Stadium Tuesday night with a new piece of Reading baseball history.<\/p>\n
A Rocky Colavito bobblehead, bringing back memories.<\/p>\n
“The Reading Indians used to be the franchise here in the late ’50s into the early ’60s. So my father used to bring me out, when I was a kid, to the Reading Indians,” fan Paul Gring said.<\/p>\n
Colavito played 146 games for the Reading Indians in 1953, hitting 28 home runs and driving in 121 runs. He later spent 14 seasons in the majors and became a nine-time All-Star.<\/p>\n
“It’s important to remember him,\u201d fan Harold Spencer said. \u201cSome people just collect them (bobbleheads) and then they resell them years later. But no, for the younger, the youth, they need to know what it’s all about.\u201d<\/p>\n
More than 70 years after Rocky Colavito played in Reading, his legacy is still very much alive. This is how thousands of fans will remember him.<\/p>\n
Some came specifically for that piece of history.<\/p>\n
“My brother-in-law who lives in Camp Hill\u2026Colavito was his favorite player. So I came here especially for a bobblehead tonight,” fan Fred Majka said.<\/p>\n
For families with young baseball players, nights like this are also about creating their own memories.<\/p>\n
“It’s actually our second time coming here. It’s a lot easier coming here than driving into the city and a lot more personal. The family, they enjoy it every single time,” fan Lenny Wood said.<\/p>\n
“I want them to remember the moments that we all spend together, just coming out here and hanging out,” Erin Wood said.<\/p>\n
Colavito later made Berks County home, living in Bernville until his death in 2024.<\/p>\n
