PITTSBURGH \u2014 Automated red-light enforcement cameras are live at two Pittsburgh intersections as the city begins the first phase of a program aimed at improving traffic safety.<\/p>\n
The cameras will begin operating at the intersection of North Dallas Avenue and Penn Avenue in Point Breeze and at Saw Mill Run Boulevard and Woodruff Street in Beechview.<\/p>\n
For the first 60 days, drivers who are photographed running a red light at either intersection will receive a warning mailed to the vehicle\u2019s registered owner. After the warning period, violations will result in a $100 citation. The violation will not add points to the driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n
Mayor Corey O\u2019Connor, Councilperson Erika Strassburger, the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure, Pittsburgh Bureau of Police and other city officials announced the launch Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Residents who live near the Dallas and Penn Avenue intersection said they hope the cameras will make the area safer.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve been here 25 years, and there\u2019s been so many accidents,\u201d one resident said. \u201cI hope they\u2019re helpful, because this is a really dangerous intersection.\u201d<\/p>\n
The city plans to activate four additional red-light cameras over the next several months. The locations below will have a 30-day warning period before citations are issued.<\/p>\n

The program eventually is expected to include 21 automated red-light enforcement cameras across Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n
City officials said every suspected violation captured by the cameras will be reviewed by a police officer before a citation is issued.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom 2019 to 2023, Pittsburgh had reported 759 accidents that involved people running red lights. And unfortunately, 7 of those resulted in someone\u2019s death,\u201d said O\u2019Connor. <\/p>\n
Verra Mobility, the software company hired by the city, said the system is designed to collect information specifically for red-light enforcement and traffic safety.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt strictly related to red light enforcement and driving safety, so we capture the back of the vehicle, the plate, and that is the information that will be working with,\u201d said Melba Rivera-Irizarry of Verra Mobility.<\/p>\n
