University of Pittsburgh effectively bans e-scooters on campus with new storage policy<\/p>\n

The University of Pittsburgh has implemented a ban on storing e-scooters on campus property, citing safety and legal concerns.<\/p>\n

The University of Pittsburgh announced a new policy this week banning the storage of electric scooters on campus property, effective Aug. 1, citing safety and legal concerns. <\/p>\n

The policy prohibits e-scooters from being parked or stored on sidewalks, bike racks, or even inside dorm rooms. Officials stated that any scooters found on university property will be impounded, with a $100 fee for the first offense and $200 for a second. <\/p>\n

“As a regular commuter, I feel like this is not fair with us,” said Arun Patro, a Ph.D. student at Pitt. <\/p>\n

Some students, like Serena Rodgers, expressed frustration with the new rule.<\/p>\n

“I’m already on campus, and I brought it, so now I don’t know what to do with it. It’s just stuck in my dorm room, and I can’t ride it,” she said. <\/p>\n

The university explained that the policy addresses several issues, including Pennsylvania state laws that prohibit e-scooters on public roads and sidewalks, as well as concerns about pedestrian collisions and the safety of lithium-ion batteries. <\/p>\n

“Scooters continue to not use the bike lanes and even use the sidewalks, causing a lot of conflict with pedestrians. So I think that would be very useful,” said Jacob Evangelista, a student and member of the club Complete Streets at Pitt. <\/p>\n

Evangelista also highlighted the lack of safety training for e-scooter operators.<\/p>\n

“E-scooters have such a low barrier to entry compared to other modes of transportation. You don’t have to have any safety training before operating on the roads, and it is already illegal to operate on the road, so it doesn’t make it; it makes it so that’s easier to enforce as well,” he said. <\/p>\n

While the policy is already in effect, some students said they never received the email announcing the change.
