PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) \u2014 The Democratic National Committee is meeting in Austin, Texas, and two members from the Philadelphia area are making history for the committee this year with their appearance.<\/p>\n
Philadelphia City Councilman Jim Harrity and Prospect Park Borough Councilman Emmet Harrity will be the first brothers to serve together on the committee.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe actually thought the Kennedy\u2019s \u2014 Robert and John \u2014 were there, but they never actually became members,\u201d Jim said. \u201cThey were only delegates because that\u2019s all they needed to win the presidency, so they didn\u2019t bother with all the rest.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Harrity\u2019s are bothering by being in attendance this year. Jim Harrity was elected to the DNC by the Pennsylvania Democratic Committee, and Emmett was appointed by DNC chair Ken Martin. <\/p>\n
The brothers said they\u2019re looking forward to socializing in Austin. They\u2019ve both been open about their journeys to sobriety, but Jim said that doesn\u2019t mean they can\u2019t schmooze. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ll have fun. It\u2019s a lot of networking,\u201d he said. \u201cMostly it\u2019s trying to figure out how we can team up with other states to get new ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n
The gathering is expected to be busy, with some major items on the DNC\u2019s agenda, including protecting voting rights, winning the November midterms and voting on the 2028 primary election calendar \u2014 with South Carolina expected to go first once again.
