Two University of Pittsburgh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/business\/healthcare-business\/2026\/08\/04\/research-grant-cancellations-university-of-pittsburgh\/stories\/202608040045\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">grants worth a combined $4.5 million were axed<\/a>, ending investigations into post-ICU patient care and pain relief for patients with advanced cancer. So it was welcome news that the Richard King Mellon Foundation just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/news\/health\/2026\/08\/12\/rare-disease-rk-mellon-pittsburgh\/stories\/202608120010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pledged $25 million to launch a Pittsburgh-based rare-disease research hub<\/a>.
