The number may surprise you."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This has been a summer of reading throughout the Pittsburgh area, with local families clearly embracing the fun.<\/p>\n<p>Last weekend, our friends at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carnegielibrary.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh<\/a> (CLP) celebrated the joy of summer reading at their annual Extravaganza event, held at CLP\u2019s main location in Oakland. As families enjoyed games, music and more inside the library and outside, the CLP team announced the total number of books that families read during CLP\u2019s Summer Reading Challenge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidsburgh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_8579.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-217785\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"421\" data-lazy- data-lazy- data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_8579-300x181.jpg\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-217785\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_8579-300x181.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"421\"  \/><\/a>Photo from the Summer Reading Extravaganza 2026 courtesy of CLP.<\/p>\n<p>The original goal had been 160,000 books. Local families went way beyond that: The final number was 196,273 read by Pittsburgh-area families, almost a 50,000 book increase from last year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidsburgh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_2705.jpeg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-217786 size-large\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"676\" data-lazy- data-lazy- data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_2705-970x1024.jpeg\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-217786 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_2705-970x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"676\"  \/><\/a>Photo from the Summer Reading Extravaganza 2026 courtesy of CLP.<\/p>\n<p>There was plenty of celebration happening, including welcome remarks given by Andrew Medlar, President &amp; Director, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Mayor Corey O\u2019Connor and First Lady Katie O\u2019Connor, along with Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato, the county\u2019s Director of Children\u2019s Initiatives Becky Mercatoris, RAD board member Monica Malik and EQT Foundation president Ellen Rossi.<\/p>\n<p>Families also enjoyed interactive storytimes, crafts, food trucks and book giveaways.<\/p>\n<p>And while CLP\u2019s challenge is now complete, the summer of reading continues throughout the end of August with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidsburgh.org\/youre-invited-to-join-the-jerome-bettis-summer-reading-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Jerome Bettis Reading Challenge<\/a>, part of the year-long \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidsburgh.org\/the-new-wont-you-be-a-reader-regional-literacy-campaign-brings-free-books-fun-events-and-much-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Won\u2019t You Be a Reader?<\/a>\u201d campaign.<\/p>\n<p>A collaborative effort between the Grable Foundation, CLP, Scholastic Books and many other local partners, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidsburgh.org\/you-can-help-spread-the-word-free-books-are-available-for-all-local-kids-under-5-and-they-make-a-powerful-difference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Reading Ready Pittsburgh<\/a> and Literacy Pittsburgh, the \u201cWon\u2019t You Be a Reader?\u201d campaign is all about inspiring a love of reading among Pittsburgh-area young people and celebrating the champions who support them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"This has been a summer of reading throughout the Pittsburgh area, with local families clearly embracing the fun.&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":265196,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9],"tags":[20510,73,75,74],"class_list":["post-265195","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-pittsburgh","tag-carnegie-library-of-pittsbugrh","tag-pittsburgh","tag-pittsburgh-headlines","tag-pittsburgh-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/265195","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=265195"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/265195\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/265196"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=265195"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=265195"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=265195"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
