Erie Indemnity Company (ERIE), headquartered in Erie, Pennsylvania, operates as a managing attorney-in-fact for the subscribers at the Erie Insurance Exchange. Valued at\u00a0$11.7 billion by market cap,\u00a0the company\u00a0is also involved in the property and casualty insurance business through its management of Flagship City Insurance Company. It sells auto, home, life, and business insurance. <\/p>\n

Shares of\u00a0insurance company\u00a0have notably underperformed the broader market over the past year.\u00a0ERIE has declined 29.4% over this time frame, while the broader S&P 500 Index ($SPX) has\u00a0rallied nearly 21.3%. After reaching historic highs, the stock was penalised as decelerating premium growth, elevated underwriting and catastrophe losses across its underlying Insurance Exchange, and rising agent commission expenses squeezed operating margins and led to quarterly earnings misses. Investor sentiment was further dampened by short-seller reports and market scrutiny surrounding the financial health and surplus levels of its primary Exchange partner, driving capital out of the stock as Wall Street re-rated its premium valuation downward. \u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n

On Jul. 30, ERIE shares closed down by 6% after reporting its Q2 results. Its revenue stood at $1.1 billion, up 2.8% year over year. The company’s EPS increased 3.3% from the year-ago quarter to $3.45. <\/p>\n

For the current fiscal year, ending in December, analysts expect ERIE’s\u00a0EPS to grow 37.2% to $12.55 on a diluted basis. The company’s earnings surprise history is mixed. It beat the consensus estimate in two of the last four quarters while missing the forecast on two other occasions. <\/p>\n

Among the three analysts covering ERIE stock,\u00a0the consensus is a “Moderate Buy.” That’s based on one “Strong Buy” rating, and two “Holds.” <\/p>\n

On Aug. 1, William Blair analyst\u00a0Adam Klauber\u00a0maintained a “Buy”\u00a0rating on ERIE, signaling a bullish outlook for the stock. <\/p>\n

ERIE is trading above both the mean price target and the Street-high price target of $73, reflecting market optimism. <\/p>\n
