It\u2019s been a while since Eagles fans last saw white helmets paired with kelly green wings on the field in Philly. The last time came over 50 years ago, in 1973, but after the team posted a seemingly innocent video that featured the retro style, some fans are dreaming of a potential return. The video, posted Wednesday afternoon, featured Jalyx Hunt and new defensive back Riq Woolen blindly trying to match up different team helmets, but the comments were all focused on one thing: the white kelly green helmet that was curiously included in the lineup. [\u2026] So it raises the question: Are the Eagles teasing a return of the vintage look? Well, it\u2019s complicated.<\/p>\n

While I agreed with most, I didn’t agree with all of them. So I decided to take a statistical approach to remove my bias.<\/p>\n I considered Games Started, Win%, TD\/INT Ratio, Completion%, Passing Yards\/Game, Passer Rating, QBR & PFF Grade from last season for Jalen Hurts & each QB we’ll face this year. I only used regular season data for all factors, except Games Started, which I included PlayOff starts for. I converted each factor to a scale of 0-100% & then took the average of all 8 factors to arrive at 1 # for ranking all 15 QBs. These are the results…<\/p>\n LAR M.Stafford – 91%<\/p>\n DAL D.Prescott – 70%<\/p>\n SF B.Purdy – 69%<\/p>\n SEA S.Darnold – 65%<\/p>\n PHI J.Hurts – 59%<\/p>\n IND D.Jones – 58%<\/p>\n JAX T.Lawrence – 55%<\/p>\n CHI C.Williams – 52%<\/p>\n HOU CJ Stroud – 51%<\/p>\n PIT A.Rodgers – 49%<\/p>\n ARI J.Brissett – 42%<\/p>\n NYG J.Dart – 37%<\/p>\n CAR B.Young – 36%<\/p>\n WAS J.Daniels – 23%<\/p>\n TEN C.Ward – 15%<\/p>\n So taking a strictly data-driven assessment from last season for each QB puts 4 QBs ahead of Hurts, for a total of 5 games where PHI doesn’t have the advantage. While I still don’t agree w\/some of the results, it’s interesting to see where each QB ranked.<\/p>\n
Sometimes, it\u2019s alright to just say a player is average right now. Not everything has to be a hot take about something being terrible or amazing. I don\u2019t look at Steen and see a player the Eagles desperately need to replace. I also don\u2019t see a clear long-term starting right guard who has already answered every question and deserves a 2nd contract as soon as possible. Right now, I think Steen is an average NFL starting guard. And that isn\u2019t necessarily a criticism. Finding competent offensive linemen is difficult, and Steen has already shown that he possesses traits worth developing. His athletic ability is legitimate. He gets out of his stance extremely quickly, moves very well for his size, understands combination blocks, and can execute difficult assignments in space. His zone blocking in particular gives you something to work with, especially when you consider what Sean Mannion\u2019s offense will ask from linemen.<\/p>\n
1) Who is first up between Andy Dalton and Tanner McKee? Jalen Hurts hasn\u2019t played in a preseason game since he took a late cheap shot out of bounds against the Jets in 2022. The Eagles are installing a new offense under Sean Mannion, which is perhaps a reason to get Hurts some live game reps, but I would be shocked if he took any snaps. So, who will start then? The Eagles have tried all offseason to say that Andy Dalton and Tanner McKee are co-QB2s. Well, unless they come out on the field together Saturday night, one will start, and one won\u2019t. No matter how the Eagles spin it, the guy who starts is the QB2, and the other guy is the QB3. On Thursday, Nick Sirianni declined to answer who would play first, saying that the team still had to think it through. Dalton has gotten more second-team snaps than McKee this summer, so my guess is that it will be him. And how they play matters, for trade purposes, since one or the other could be dealt to another team.<\/p>\n
TE now feels like the more complicated position group. Dallas Goedert is TE1 and Johnny Mundt is TE2. Rookie Eli Stowers has struggled this summer, but will clearly make the roster. Assuming the Eagles keep a fourth TE, you are likely choosing between Cam Latu and Grant Calcaterra. The argument for Latu is that he can play FB or TE, is the better blocker and is excellent on STs. Calcaterra is the more gifted receiver and athlete. I would keep Latu, since you already have Stowers who could develop into a role player for the passing game. The Eagles have had a strange loyalty to Calcaterra so you can\u2019t write him off. The Eagles could trade for a TE. I\u2019m sure they will be taking a long hard look around the league to see who might become available.<\/p>\n
Which player further down the depth chart should fans watch Saturday? Berman: Maximus Pulley is not a name fans might know yet, but he\u2019s a sleeper for the 53-man roster. The Eagles lack safety depth. Pulley, an undrafted rookie from Wofford, has taken work with the second-team defense and could be in line to make the roster with a strong finish to the summer. Also, I mentioned Weru above. Bernard gets more of the attention; Weru, a native of Kenya, was an international rugby player who is now learning football. He\u2019s shown flashes in camp rushing around the edge. One note on Bernard and Weru: the NFL doesn\u2019t have any film on them. There\u2019s no college tape. Any promise they show might entice teams to claim them if the Eagles plan to waive one or both and use the international player exemption on the practice squad. That\u2019s why I\u2019m also curious how much they play in this game.<\/p>\n
This is the first time we\u2019ll see rookies like Eli Stowers, Markel Bell and Cole Payton, the first time we\u2019ll see newcomers like Willie Lampkin, A.J. Epenesa and Andy Dalton, the first time time we\u2019ll see undrafted free agents like Maximus Pulley, Kapena Gushiken and Joshua Weru. Just as importantly, it\u2019s the first time we\u2019ll see Sean Mannion. Mannion, the Eagles\u2019 rookie offensive coordinator, will make his debut as a play caller Saturday when the Eagles open the preseason at 7 p.m. against the Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.] He won\u2019t have Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, DeVonta Smith or Dallas Goedert as well as several other starters, but he\u2019ll be under the microscope nonetheless as he calls plays for the first time for his newly installed West Coast Offense. \u201cFor ourselves as an offense, I want to see execution, I want to see play style,\u201d Mannion said. \u201cThose are the two things I want to see. We talk about play style a lot, the effort, the physicality, the strain to finish. \u201dThen offensively, just can we have a clean operation? Can we line up? Can we execute the offense? Those are the major things I\u2019m looking for.\u201d Mannion, the Eagles\u2019 sixth play caller since 2021, modeled his scheme after the concepts made popular by Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay. Mannion coached in Green Bay under Matt LaFLeur, who coached under both Shanahan and McVay.<\/p>\n
Tier 2: Midtier QB1s. In this second tier, managers can land quality starters with upside potential. Daniels\u2019 second pro season was limited by injuries (he played in only seven games), but he has the pocket presence and rushing ability to finish as a top-three scorer. Daniels scored 20.9 fantasy points per game in 2024, throwing 25 touchdowns and rushing for 891 yards with six touchdowns. \u2026 I\u2019m higher on Williams than most because of his playmaking ability in Ben Johnson\u2019s offense. Williams scored 18.1 fantasy points per game last season, and he can produce breakout weeks (eight games with 20 or more points). Another year of development under Johnson could put Williams in the top five. \u2026 Hurts gets a new playcaller in Philadelphia with coordinator Sean Mannion. Think of an offense that meshes the West Coast and spread systems, which should create more timing in the pass game. With A.J. Brown now in New England, Hurts will target receiver DeVonta Smith as his No. 1, and the team drafted wideout Makai Lemon. As always, Hurts provides scoring upside as a runner in the low red zone\/goal line area of the field (37 rushing touchdowns over his past three seasons). \u2026 Prescott won\u2019t give you high-end rushing numbers, but he plays in an explosive Dallas pass game featuring CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens and tight end Jake Ferguson. Prescott scored 18.1 fantasy points per game last season, throwing for 4,555 yards (third most) and 30 touchdowns.<\/p>\n

In a corresponding move, the Ravens placed offensive tackle Kendall Lamm on the reserve\/retired list, ending his 11-year career less than two weeks after signing in Baltimore. Oddly, this is the second veteran OT to retire shortly after joining the team this year. Hakeem Adeniji signed just at the end of July and retired after just one week of training camp. [BLG Note: Lamm spent time with the Eagles last year.]<\/p>\n
Some believe Schottenheimer must make the playoffs to keep Jones happy. Others believe the Cowboys must win at least one playoff game. Others believe that simply winning a lowly wild-card game won\u2019t be enough, that it must be at least a divisional-round win, perhaps even a conference championship. The Cowboys themselves are openly talking about the Super Bowl, and frankly, I have no idea what to make of that coming from a 7-9-1 team. My guess? Schottenheimer doesn\u2019t need to reach the Super Bowl to keep his job. But after going 7-9-1 in his first season, another year without meaningful January football would make it very difficult for Jerry Jones to argue that the team is heading in the right direction. A playoff appearance probably keeps him around – if only because of the organizational inertia the Cowboys tend to display. A playoff win should make his position considerably safer. Anything less, particularly if the Cowboys stumble out of the gate again, could put Jones in a very different frame of mind.<\/p>\n
The NFL announced that Washington Commanders DE Dorance Armstrong has been suspended for 1 game for violating the personal conduct policy. Armstrong is recovering from a torn ACL, and was placed on the active\/PUP list before the start of training camp last month, but was taken off of it on Aug. 7. Armstrong has been at practice, but is still sidelined and his availability for the season opener in Philadelphia against the Eagles wasn\u2019t guaranteed. The suspension officially starts on Aug. 30 and he\u2019s eligible for reinstatement on Mon., Sept. 14. He will be eligible to participate in all preseason activities, including games.<\/p>\n
There are spots to be won, and lots of decisions to be made regarding the New York Giants\u2019 53-man roster before their regular-season opener on September 13 against the Dallas Cowboys. Where do things stand as the Giants prepare to open their preseason on Saturday against the Minnesota Vikings? Let\u2019s look at the locks, bubble players, and long shots as the true training camp portion of the season ends, and teams shift into more of a preseason mode centered around games.<\/p>\n
For the next spot on the 2026 NFL prediction grid we are looking for a team that just doesn\u2019t have it and everyone knows it. This team still isn\u2019t ready for prime time and needs to rebuild before anyone will take them seriously.
