BETHLEHEM, Pa. \u2013 Taking inspiration from her late father and \u201cbiggest cheerleader,\u201d a popular Lehigh Valley baker is making a comeback with a new brick-and-mortar location in Northampton County.<\/p>\n
Angela Malpedo, who previously operated Sugar Babe Cupcakes bake shops from 2012 to 2017 at multiple Bethlehem storefronts, plans to open her new Frosted Chaos bakery in early fall at 518 Long St. in Bethlehem.<\/p>\n

The space was the original home of Granola Factory, a 20-year-old bakery that is continuing operations at another Bethlehem site.<\/p>\n
Malpedo views the revival of her business as a \u201cfull-circle moment\u201d as she got her start in professional baking nearly two decades ago at Granola Factory.<\/p>\n
In recent years, people have often asked her if she would open another bakery, and she\u2019s consistently told them, \u2018It would have to be the right scenario.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Long Street space proved to be that right scenario, and her heart told her to jump on it.<\/p>\n
\u201cEighteen years ago, I walked into where the Granola Factory originally operated because they needed a baker,\u201d Malpedo said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI told them, \u2018I don\u2019t have experience, but I love to bake.\u2019 They were so gracious to give me an opportunity, and I learned so much while working there. That\u2019s also when I started doing cupcakes on the side, and then I eventually branched off and started my own business in 2010. Earlier this year, I randomly ran into Sue, the Granola Factory\u2019s original owner, and I asked her what was happening with the business\u2019 former space. It turned out that it was available, and one thing led to another, and here I am opening another bakery. It just felt like the right thing to do in my heart because that\u2019s where I got my start, and I always felt like that chapter of me operating bakeries wasn\u2019t done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Malpedo established Sugar Babe Cupcakes as an online business in 2010 before opening her first brick-and-mortar location in 2012 at 14 W. Broad St. in downtown Bethlehem.<\/p>\n
In 2015, she moved operations to another Bethlehem storefront at 308 W. Broad St. before relocating again in 2017 to a section of the Bethlehem Dairy Store on Linden Street.<\/p>\n

Malpedo has a lifelong passion for baking, beginning at an early age alongside her nana, and her baking skills landed her appearances on two popular Food Network shows \u2013 \u201cBakers Vs. Fakers\u201d in 2018 and \u201cChopped Sweets\u201d in 2020.<\/p>\n
In the years leading up to the COVID-19 pandemic, Malpedo dialed back baking operations as her focus turned to her father, Lou Malpedo, who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer, in March 2017.<\/p>\n
Lou, a retired Bethlehem firefighter, passed away in February 2020 following his three-year health battle, and Angela quickly found a way to honor his legacy of helping others by giving back herself.<\/p>\n
At the onset of the pandemic in March 2020, she spread cheer and hope to local first responders and health care workers \u2013 including those who assisted her father \u2013 with deliveries of her donated cookies.<\/p>\n
\u201cTaking a step back from baking turned out to be such a blessing because I got to spend that time with my dad \u2013 driving him to doctor\u2019s appointments and being with him at the hospital, not knowing that he would pass away in 2020,\u201d Malpedo said.<\/p>\n
\u201cRight when COVID was starting, I was in the thick of grief, but we just had the shutdown and couldn\u2019t see people or do normal things. So, I decided to donate cookies to first responders and hospital workers, and that kind of pulled me out of being in a not-so-great place. It helped me process my grief while honoring him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following the closure of her last Bethlehem storefront in 2017, Malpedo took on a variety of new professional endeavors, including serving as an after-care specialist at Connell Funeral Home and, most recently, a family business consultant at Compass Point.<\/p>\n
She feels the presence of her dad strongly in shifting gears back to baking.<\/p>\n
\u201cI never fully believed in myself, but he always did,\u201d Angela said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, when this new opportunity came about, I felt like it was my dad pushing me to do this. Baking is always what\u2019s kept me going and got me through tough times. It also connects me to other people, and I love being a part of people\u2019s celebrations and milestones. Recently, I also got certified in grief counseling, and my hope is to continue doing that at the bakery by offering hands-on baking workshops with the grief support.\u201d<\/p>\n
At her new Frosted Chaos bakery, Malpedo plans to offer a wide array of made-on-site treats, including rotating cupcakes, cookies, brownies, crumb cakes and muffins.<\/p>\n
One of her specialties is a \u201cbookie,\u201d a brownie sandwiched between two chocolate chip cookies and layered with peanut butter or vanilla icing.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ll have a lot of unique flavors,\u201d Angela said. \u201cI plan to offer two different types of cupcakes on the menu each week, and we\u2019ll also have sticky buns on the weekends.\u201d<\/p>\n

With help from her husband, Keaton Yoo, Angela is overhauling the Long Street space with new counters and other updates.<\/p>\n
The new Frosted Chaos bakery, which also will offer coffee, is tentatively set to operate from 7 or 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. or sellout Thursday through Sunday, Angela said.<\/p>\n
Guests also will be able to shop a curated selection of home goods, including items geared toward baking and entertaining such as aprons, serving plates, kitchen towels and celebration items, curated by Angela\u2019s friend, Brianna Lasko, who also operates a home goods store, Lovely by Brianna<\/a>, on Bethlehem\u2019s Main Street.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019d also like to do an after-hours event \u2013 from 4 to 7 p.m. on one Saturday a month, where it would be a mystery menu,\u201d Angela added. \u201cPeople would have to come out to see what\u2019s on the menu.
