Pennsylvania lost more than a program this week.<\/p>\n
I’ve worn the badge of a full-time Pennsylvania State Game Warden for several years, and this week I watched something end that I never thought would: the Deputy Game Warden program, a 123-year-old tradition dating back to 1903. On September 1, roughly 145 deputies statewide will be forced to retire. By October 1, they’ll turn in the equipment they used to serve their communities, some for decades.<\/p>\n
What’s shocked me most is how they found out. Our deputies learned that their program was ending via email. Full-time wardens, the people who worked alongside these deputies and were supposed to help manage this transition, weren’t informed until after the email was sent. There was no conversation with the officers whose teams were being dissolved, no chance to plan for the gap, no heads-up to the supervisors who’d now have to explain it to their own people. If the Commission trusted deputies enough to hand them law enforcement authority for over a century, they were owed more than an impersonal email announcing the end of their service.<\/p>\n
I lost coworkers this week. I lost friends. I lost the team that’s helped me serve my community for years. I don’t know how I’ll do this job without them, because until now, I’ve never had to. \u00a0<\/p>\n
The Commission says this reflects a shift toward “the most efficient and effective full-time professional law enforcement workforce.” Whatever the agency’s internal reasoning, the reality is this: 67 counties don’t patrol themselves; people do, and as of September 1, there will be 145 fewer officers serving our communities.<\/p>\n
For those who don’t know, deputies aren’t stereotypical volunteers. They completed a basic academy course, 80 hours of on-the-job training, and maintained their credentials with the same annual training required of full-time wardens. In the field, deputies handle countless nuisance wildlife complaints, license checks, and calls from concerned neighbors; the unglamorous work that keeps a rural community’s relationship with the Game Commission positive. They were often the first face a landowner or hunter saw. Without them, I won’t keep up the same workload, and the public won’t have the same accessible relationship with their local wardens.<\/p>\n
There’s also a safety dimension to this that hasn’t received enough attention. This job means patrolling alone in remote terrain, often with no cell service, sometimes confronting armed individuals hours away from the nearest backup. Deputies are frequently that backup: the second vehicle that could actually get to me, the extra set of eyes on a check that could turn confrontational, the person who knew to worry if I didn’t check in. That isn’t a convenience. It’s a safety net that full-time wardens have relied on for over a century, and as of September 1, it’s gone statewide, with nothing announced to replace it.<\/p>\n
The Commission also cites a recent PA Supreme Court ruling restricting warrantless searches on posted property, arguing the legal landscape has grown too complex for a part-time workforce. That explanation doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. Our deputies had already completed this year’s required training before that ruling came down. If the Commission’s real concern was a shift in the legal landscape, the response could have been to update training or procedures. Instead, they eliminated the entire program right as hunting season, our busiest time of year, is about to begin.<\/p>\n
What happens next: response times lengthen during our busiest time of year, the face-to-face interactions that our communities count on disappear, and hunter safety classes fall to already overworked full-time officers, who are now choosing between community events and emergency calls.<\/p>\n
I’m not writing this because full-time wardens can’t do the job. I’m writing it because for 123 years, we never had to do it alone \u2014 deputies were the partners who watched our backs in the field and the neighbors who kept our communities connected. This week, the agency that claims to support its full-time officers took away our best allies: people who knew the back roads, the landowners, and the poachers by name. The people who showed up when we called for backup, and who gave up weekends and holidays, often unpaid, for wildlife conservation and for us. That kind of teamwork, and that kind of community trust, doesn’t come back once it walks out the door.<\/p>\n
What I want most from this isn’t sympathy \u2014 it’s transparency. The Commission owes the public, and the officers still doing this job, real answers, not a vague reference to “efficiency.” Why was this decision made in the weeks before hunting season, right after deputies finished their annual training? What is the coverage plan for the counties losing their deputies? Who was consulted before this was decided, and who wasn’t? I’d ask readers, and especially our state legislators, to demand that accountability from the Game Commission.
