{"id":267438,"date":"2026-08-18T09:34:06","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T09:34:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/267438\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T09:34:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T09:34:06","slug":"free-stem-camp-targets-aspiring-engineers-in-philadelphia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/267438\/","title":{"rendered":"Free STEM camp targets aspiring engineers in Philadelphia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Philly and the Pa. suburbs to South Jersey and Delaware, what would you like WHYY News to cover? <a href=\"#Section1\">Let us know!<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>In the hallways of Thomas Jefferson University\u2019s East Falls campus, a quiet, 12-year-old Aarna Channappagoudar was about to launch the inaugural test flight of a drone that she, and several other kids, designed and built themselves.\n<\/p>\n<p>The drone, which has a small plastic core with four legs sticking out, rose unsteadily, and began to make a loop.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOK,\u201d said camp counselor Olivia Hannallah, a rising senior at <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/jefferson-university-alma-mater-song\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas Jefferson University<\/a>, where she studies engineering. \u201cCan you have it come back?\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p>Channappagoudar fiddled with the controls. The drone rose higher, hovered for a moment \u2014 and then smacked into the wall and dropped to the floor.
