{"id":267447,"date":"2026-08-18T10:04:06","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T10:04:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/267447\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T10:04:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T10:04:06","slug":"a-unions-group-campaigns-against-garrity-for-pa-governor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/267447\/","title":{"rendered":"A unions group campaigns against Garrity for Pa. governor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Garrity and the \u2018right to work\u2019<\/p>\n<p>At the event, political leaders criticized Garrity for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/politics\/2026\/08\/garritys-right-to-work-group-endorsement-draws-union-backlash-in-pa-governors-race.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">accepting an endorsement<\/a> by the political arm of the Associated Builders and Contractors, a national trade association representing the construction industry, which supports \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.org\/Politics-Policy\/Priority-Issue-Briefs\/PIB-Blog\/right-to-work\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">right-to-work<\/a>\u201d legislation that prohibits labor agreements that require members of a staff to join a union or pay dues, even if a staff won the right to organize.\n<\/p>\n<p>Unions often argue that wages are lower in \u201cright-to-work\u201d states a contention <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/digest\/202208\/impacts-right-work-laws-unionization-and-wages?page=1&amp;perPage=50\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">supported by some research<\/a>. However, the precise effect remains debated because right-to-work states differ from other states in their industries, living costs and other labor policies.\n<\/p>\n<p>Davis pledged that Pennsylvania would not adopt a right-to-work law while he and Shapiro remain in office.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPennsylvania will never be a right to work state under our watch,\u201d he said at the event.\n  <\/p>\n<p>Garrity has not made enacting right-to-work legislation a central proposal of her gubernatorial campaign. Her campaign has accused Shapiro of being too <a href=\"https:\/\/keystonenewsroom.com\/newsletter\/archive\/keystone-labor-report\/anti-union-group-backs-garrity\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">closely aligned with building-trades<\/a> unions and has argued that Pennsylvania needs to expand workforce opportunities beyond traditional union apprenticeship programs.\n<\/p>\n<p>Shapiro has secured endorsements from several of Pennsylvania\u2019s largest labor organizations in his bid for a second term, including the state\u2019s largest labor federation, the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO, and the state\u2019s largest teachers union, the Pennsylvania State Education Association.\n<\/p>\n<p>However, Garrity has not yet announced comparable support from a major, traditional labor union in the race.
