HANOVER TWP., Pa. – A years-long process to bring a new air cargo complex to Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) has taken another step forward.<\/p>\n
Earlier this month, the board of governors for the Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority (LNAA), which oversees ABE, as well as Queen City Airport in Allentown and Braden Airpark in Forks Township, held a special meeting to officially accept the terms of the $40.79 million INFRA grant that will pay for the project.<\/p>\n
The INFRA (Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight and Highway Projects) program is administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation. It\u00a0awards competitive grants for multimodal freight and highway projects deemed to be of national or regional significance.<\/p>\n
The grant for ABE was announced in early 2024, the first of many steps in bringing the project to fruition.<\/p>\n
Plans call for a new 75,000-100,000 square-foot facility on the northside of LNAA property near the airport in Hanover Township, Lehigh County.<\/p>\n
The official name of the building is the Northside Logistics and Cargo Complex, which, according to a previous news release, will include a\u00a0direct truck-to-airport loading operations area and will be able to accommodate up to four tenants.<\/p>\n
ABE’s air cargo business continues to soar. Last year the airport processed nearly 302 million pounds of air cargo, a 21% increase from 2024.<\/p>\n
With the procedural step of accepting the grant agreement now in the rearview mirror, LNAA spokesperson Colin Riccobon told 69 News that design and permitting on the project continues, with construction expected to start in mid-2027 and take about two years.<\/p>\n
