COOPERSBURG, Pa. – A business located in the Lehigh Valley has a hit on its hands, making bats of all shapes and sizes. And that’s not all.<\/p>\n
For three generations of the Pino Family, Coopersburg Sports has been the name, and baseball is the game.<\/p>\n
The company manufactures all kinds of souvenirs: bats, bags, even batting circles. Coopersburg Sports has been running circles around its competition for 35 years.<\/p>\n
“We make about 30 percent of our product here. We import the wood from Canada, it’s shipped to an Amish woodworker in PA, where the bats are turned and painted, and from there, we print it,” said Scott Pino, president and CEO of Coopersburg Sports.<\/p>\n
The company was founded as a handle company way back in 1791, It evolved to full-sized baseball bats in the 1950’s. In the 90’s, the Pino family transitioned to souvenirs when it landed a license with Major and Minor League Baseball.<\/p>\n
“Our Minor League business is equal to our Major League business. There’s a lot more kids at Minor League parks than there are Major League parks,” said Pino.<\/p>\n
Coopersburg Sports sends out thousands of pounds of merchandise every day. We visited while a pallet of merchandise was being sent to 41 Seaver Way, the home of the New York Mets.<\/p>\n
Eroca Bergey is a screen printer and bat maker who has worked for the company for 7 years.<\/p>\n
“If it’s a really big order, like a couple of thousand (mini bats), I can usually get 2,500 done in a morning,” Bergey said.<\/p>\n
Snack Bats are one of their most popular items.<\/p>\n
“There’s ice cream bats, hot dog bats, peanut bats and popcorn bats,” said Bergey.<\/p>\n
Pino says he has reached market domination with his newest creation, the Beverage Bat.<\/p>\n
“You don’t really see mini bats on TV a lot, but you see the beverage bats everywhere. And they’re getting very creative. The Minor League teams, the Major League teams, they’re putting slushies in them, margaritas, in addition to beer. So, it’s been very popular,” said Pino.<\/p>\n
Their largest bat, 18 feet tall, leans up against the Club Shop at Coca-Cola Park.<\/p>\n
“That’s a fiberglass bat. That’s probably the largest bat we’ve ever made. It’s the only one we’ve ever made,” Pino said.<\/p>\n
