Last month, we posted<\/a> about a collaboration between The Children\u2019s Museum of Pittsburgh<\/a> (CMP) and Pittsburgh\u2019s Public Source<\/a> inviting Pittsburgh-region folks of all ages (kids included) to create \u201czines\u201d \u2014 small, self-made booklets about any people, places or experiences that interest you \u2014 and have the chance to share them with the Pittsburgh community.<\/p>\n

As planned, Public Source and their partners (including SLB Radio<\/a> and CMP\u2019s Museum Lab<\/a>, among others) are now launching a series of workshops and events (many of them free) where you can make a zine, learn a new skill or get some inspiration. <\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the schedule and details:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Zine workshop, Aug. 21, 5\u20138 p.m.: Join artist John Pe\u00f1a and Public Source for a free, hands-on zine workshop hosted by Artists Image Resource. Make your own zine and learn more about submitting work to the zine storytelling exhibit.<\/p>\n

Bookbinding workshops + AmaZINE Educator Workshops, Aug. 29\u201330:\u00a0All are invited to learn bookbinding techniques at MuseumLab that can be put to use in making your own zines. And for the educator workshops, learn basic zine-making techniques, explore ways to help your kids follow their curiosity and tell their stories, and see ways to use zines in your classroom.<\/p>\n

Making Red String Zines, Sept. 12, 12:30-1 p.m.: Picture a cork-board with a bunch of scraps, pins and red string. Deep theories, wild ideas \u2013 what would be on your board? We\u2019ll create zines and recordings based on your passionate rants and fixations. This free event is open to all youth ages 12-18.<\/p>\n

Almost Perfect: An Introduction to DIY Photobook Binding, Sept. 19 and 26, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.:\u00a0Have you ever wanted to make a photobook but didn\u2019t know where to start? Join artist\u00a0Brent Nakamoto\u00a0of\u00a0Almost Perfect Press<\/a>\u00a0for a hands-on workshop that guides participants through creating a photobook from concept to completion, leaving with a designed and handbound chapbook.<\/p>\n

Reporting your world: Turn what you notice into a zine, Sept. 20, 3 p.m.:\u00a0You don\u2019t need to be a journalist to report on the world around you. Pittsburgh\u2019s Public Source will share simple techniques journalists use \u2014 observing closely, asking good questions, gathering details and talking with neighbors \u2014 and help participants turn what they discover into a mini-zine about a place, person or issue that matters to them.<\/p>\n

Participants will leave with the start of a handmade piece of journalism that captures something about their community through their own eyes. Finish it at home and keep it for yourself or submit it to our zine storytelling exhibit.<\/p>\n

Zines 101 \u2013 Make your own DIY mini-magazine with Dana Mendieta, Sept. 20, 7-9 p.m.:\u00a0Curious about zines or interested in making your own? Join local zine maker Dana Mendieta (\u201cEverything In Neon\u201d) for a beginner-friendly workshop covering the history and basics of zine making, different formats and DIY techniques. Participants will experiment with collage, text, drawing and mixed media and create a mini zine.<\/p>\n
