READING, Pa. \u2013 The Berks County Board of Elections on Thursday voted to approve the schedule for the ballot drop boxes for the Nov. 3 general election.<\/p>\n
The county provides three locations where voters may drop off their mail-in\/absentee ballots: the County Services Center in downtown Reading, the County\u2019s South Campus in Mohnton and the Reading Regional Airport.<\/p>\n
The drop boxes will be available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays from Oct. 19 through Oct. 30.<\/p>\n
The hours will be expanded the weekend before Election Day to:<\/p>\n
Saturday, Oct. 31 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.<\/p>\n
Sunday, Nov. 1 from 12 noon to 4 p.m.<\/p>\n
Monday, Nov. 2 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.<\/p>\n
On Election Day, the boxes will be available starting at 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.<\/p>\n
Commissioner Michael Rivera noted that voters may only drop off their own ballots unless they have obtained a designated agent form for someone who would not have the physical ability to get to one of the locations.<\/p>\n
Rivera said there will be two deputy sheriffs stationed at each of the locations who will ask voters if they are dropping off their own ballots and if they have signed and dated them.<\/p>\n
In other business, the board voted to refer two voter registration issues to the District Attorney\u2019s Office for further investigation.<\/p>\n
Solicitor Cody L. Kauffman explained the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services sent letters to two individuals from registration applications from previous years where the individuals checked off that they were not U.S. citizens, but then proceeded to sign the declaration stating that they were U.S. citizens for at least 30 days prior to an election.<\/p>\n
Kauffman said the county has voter registrations on file for both voters, but neither ever voted in any elections.<\/p>\n
He said the signatures could represent perjury, which is a crime under the federal voter registration law.<\/p>\n
Kauffman further noted that the applications may have been confused with other applications submitted for public benefits but suggested that the commissioners should refer the matters for investigation.<\/p>\n
County Commissioner Dante Santoni Jr. said the commissioners were taking the action because the law establishes the rules, but that the District Attorney will determine if there was a potential language barrier.<\/p>\n
