<\/p>\nThursday is a NEXT Weather Alert Day as showers and thunderstorms become more widespread this afternoon and evening.<\/p>\n
The first half of today is definitely the better half for outdoor plans. We’re starting warm and muggy \u2014 temperatures are already near 80 with dewpoints in the upper 60s \u2014 but most of the morning should be relatively quiet.<\/p>\n
A tornado watch is in effect across the Philadelphia area through 10 p.m. Thursday.<\/p>\n
A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect across the region until 10 p.m.<\/p>\n

Conditions go downhill this afternoon. Scattered storms may begin developing early in the afternoon, then become more numerous through the mid-to-late afternoon and evening. If you have pool, beach or other outdoor plans, I would plan to wrap them up early.<\/p>\n
Keep the umbrella handy and make sure you have a way to receive weather warnings later today. Roughly between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. storms start to creep into the area, bringing heavy rain, damaging winds and an isolated tornado threat. Winds could exceed 50 mph. <\/p>\n

The evening commute could be particularly messy with torrential downpours capable of producing significant ponding and localized flash flooding.<\/p>\n
NEXT big weather changes<\/p>\n
Thurday is a NEXT Weather Alert day, and the threat has increased.<\/p>\n
A strong cold front approaching from the west will interact with a very warm, moisture-rich air mass over our region. At the same time, a warm front will be draped across parts of southeastern Pennsylvania, Delaware and southern New Jersey. That combination will support multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.<\/p>\n
Flooding is probably our biggest overall concern. The majority of the region will be under a flood watch from Thursday at noon through 2 a.m. Friday.<\/p>\n

Atmospheric moisture is unusually high, and thunderstorms could produce rainfall rates of 1-3 inches per hour. Most areas could pick up 1\u20132 inches, but localized totals of 3+ inches are possible where storms repeatedly move over the same locations.<\/p>\n
The greatest flash flood concern includes the Philadelphia metro, southeastern Pennsylvania, much of New Jersey and northern Delaware.<\/p>\n
There is also an increased severe weather threat. Damaging wind gusts are possible, but we’ll also be watching the warm front location closely because storms interacting with that boundary could rotate. A few tornadoes are possible, including in the Philadelphia metro area, with the greatest concern generally south of the Pennsylvania Turnpike into northern Delaware and southern New Jersey.<\/p>\n

The main severe and flooding threat should wind down later tonight.<\/p>\n
Friday provides a break for most of us with partly sunny skies and highs near 80. Unfortunately, the front stalls just offshore rather than completely leaving the picture. Waves of low pressure riding along it could bring another period of rain Friday night into Saturday, especially along and east of I-95. Another round of showers is possible Sunday before high pressure finally brings quieter weather early next week.<\/p>\n
