Three paintings by Claude Monet have been added to the exhibit \u201cFrench Moderns: Matisse, Renoir, Degas,\u201d now on view at the Frick Pittsburgh through Oct. 11.<\/p>\n
Due to a travel coincidence, the Frick was given the opportunity to display the Monet paintings as they returned to the East Coast after being on loan in another exhibit.<\/p>\n
They will be featured in The Frick Art Museum\u2019s Jacobean Gallery. The three newly added paintings include \u201cHouses of Parliament, Sunlight Effect,\u201d \u201cRising Tide at Pourville\u201d and \u201cBanks of the Seine at Lavacourt.\u201d The three paintings capture distinct moments in Monet\u2019s career. Each canvas was purchased from the artist by Paul Durand-Ruel, one of the greatest champions of Impressionist art, before being acquired by an American collector.<\/p>\n
\u201cRising Tide at Pourville\u201d depicts the windswept coast of Normandy. It was one of 17 similar paintings made by Monet, exploring the effects of light and atmosphere from different perspectives and at different times of day, an important precursor to his famous series produced in the 1890s. \u201cHouses of Parliament, Sunlight Effect\u201d is one of 19 versions that Monet painted of the Parliament building in London from his vantage point on a balcony of Saint Thomas\u2019s Hospital across the River Thames in the early 20th century. Both are part of the Brooklyn Museum\u2019s collection. <\/p>\n
Finally, \u201cBanks of the Seine at Lavacourt\u201d is from the Frick\u2019s permanent collection and is returning to the museum after being out on loan.<\/p>\n
All three paintings were recently featured in the exhibition, \u201cMonet and Venice,\u201d organized by the Brooklyn Museum and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.<\/p>\n
