Pilot dead after unexpectedly veering into state police chopper, injuring troopers inside<\/a><\/p>\nMcCarter said during a press conference Thursday that the flight path of the small Cessna 150 plane was \u201cunusual.\u201d He also said it\u2019s believed that communication had been established between the plane and helicopter, and the pilot of the plane would have known the helicopter was hovering.<\/p>\n
Investigators will turn their attention to three factors, he said: the man (the pilots and their training and qualifications), the machine (if anything about the vehicles themselves may have contributed to the crash) and the environment (such as the weather).<\/p>\n
McCarter said the wreckage is being removed from the Carlisle airport and taken to a facility in Delaware that specializes in aircraft recovery where it can further be examined, safe from inclement weather.<\/p>\n
He said there were no clues from the wreckage as to what may have caused the wreck.<\/p>\n
McCarter said witnesses reported seeing the pilot of the small plane working on it earlier that day, conducting maintenance. He said the plane had traveled south earlier Wednesday before returning to Carlisle.<\/p>\n
Within the next month or so, the NTSB should release a report of what information has been gathered so far, he said.<\/p>\n
In nine to 12 months, a factual report will be released, and then in around 18 months, a final report with a probable cause will be released.<\/p>\n
McCarter said the NTSB has received \u201cunprecedented support\u201d from local agencies in the investigation.<\/p>\n
He also said his prayers are with Sokoloski’s family, and also expressed his gratitude that the two troopers survived and are recovering. <\/p>\n
