{"id":269416,"date":"2026-08-21T10:12:07","date_gmt":"2026-08-21T10:12:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/269416\/"},"modified":"2026-08-21T10:12:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T10:12:07","slug":"philly-photographers-book-shows-life-at-summer-camp-for-jewish-girls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/269416\/","title":{"rendered":"Philly photographer&#8217;s book shows life at summer camp for Jewish girls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Philly and the Pa. suburbs to South Jersey and Delaware, what would you like WHYY News to cover? <a href=\"#Section1\">Let us know!<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>As summer begins its wind-down in Philadelphia, a South Philly photographer is presenting a photo project documenting Jewish girls during the formative period of summer camp.\n<\/p>\n<p>Rachel Wisniewski\u2019s book <a href=\"https:\/\/rachelwisniewski.com\/my-book\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cL\u2019dor Vador\u201d<\/a> follows 13 girls, aged 10\u201313, over a period of three summers between 2021 and 2023 at <a href=\"https:\/\/nahjeewah.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Camp Nah-Jee-Wah<\/a>, a 102-year-old Jewish summer camp in the Poconos.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone can look through these photos and remember a simpler time before anxiety and taxes and things like that, when summers were just the most magical thing,\u201d Wisniewski said. \u201cHaving that break off of school and getting to have control over your life and your schedule, which you don\u2019t get otherwise as a kid.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p>The self-published book is full of swimming, cluttered cabins and friendship bracelets. Days are spent swimming and braiding hair while nights are filled with bonfires and flashlights in bunks.\n<\/p>\n<p>Camp Nah-Jee Wah is a co-ed camp, but boys rarely appear in the photos, and when they do, it is by chance. Adults are similarly scarce. \u201cL\u2019dor Vador\u201d portrays a world of girls living every moment with one another for two months.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething that the girls have said to me is that they\u2019ve become a lot closer with each other than with their school friends because they\u2019re spending every single hour together.
