The nine tigers and six lions travelled thousands of kilometres across three continents to begin a new chapter under the care of global animal welfare organisation Four Paws. The animals are among 30 big cats relocated from the former Zoo Luj\u00e1n, which was closed by Argentine authorities in 2020 following concerns over animal welfare.<\/p>\n

The remaining 15 animals, eight tigers and seven lions, are being relocated to The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado in the United States. In November last year, Four Paws conducted a comprehensive veterinary assessment of more than 60 big cats and two bears at the former zoo.<\/p>\n

Many of the rescued animals had spent years in small concrete enclosures and require specialised veterinary care for conditions including dental disease, kidney problems, complications associated with declawing, and poorly healed injuries.<\/p>\n

The animals were transported following months of planning involving veterinarians, animal welfare experts, transport specialists and sanctuary teams from several countries.<\/p>\n

After receiving final veterinary clearance, the animals departed Buenos Aires on passenger and cargo flights to their new homes. The relocated animals include family groups and lifelong companions, who will remain together in their new sanctuary homes.<\/p>\n

There, they will receive tailored care and treatment for a range of health conditions, including dental disease, kidney problems, complications associated with declawing, and poorly healed injuries.<\/p>\n

The sanctuary is home to more than hundred rescued lions, leopards and tigers, which live in spacious enclosures spanning several hectares.<\/p>\n

Lionsrock is also home to various game species, including wildebeest, blesbok, Burchell\u2019s zebra, duiker, eland, impala, lechwe and mountain reedbuck, as well as a variety of bird species.<\/p>\n
