ARCHBALD, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) \u2014 The Archbald Borough Police Department hosted its third Cones With Cops event Thursday at Tasty Freeze, giving residents a chance to meet local officers over free ice cream.<\/p>\n
The event began roughly three years ago after the police chief and one of the owners of Tasty Freeze discussed creating another opportunity for officers to connect with the community beyond National Night Out.<\/p>\n
Sergeant Mike Fenton said the event was held shortly before students returned to school, giving children a chance to meet officers they may see in the school district or around town in a more casual and relaxed setting.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want the children to get to know the police officers, make sure they\u2019re not scared of us. They can come up and give us high fives, say hi to us, get to know us on a first-name basis. They don\u2019t need to call me Sergeant Fenton or Officer Fenton. They can call me Mike, Officer Mike, whatever they feel comfortable with. We just want them to be comfortable with us, to talk with us, wave to us and say hi to us,\u201d said Fenton.<\/p>\n
Fenton added that officers often meet residents while responding to calls. The department wanted to use this event to help children understand that officers were there to keep the broader community safe. The event was also intended to strengthen community relations and give residents an opportunity to get to know members of the department on a more personal level.<\/p>\n
Fenton emphasized community participation had continued to grow during the event\u2019s first three years, pointing to the nearly full parking lot Thursday evening. Leftover money raised for National Night Out helped fund Cones With Cops, and the department hopes to continue holding the event annually with Tasty Freeze.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"ARCHBALD, LACKAWANNA CO.
