S. MIDDLETON TWP., Pa. \u2013 The National Transportation Safety Board held a news conference Thursday to provide new details about the investigation into a deadly collision at Carlisle Airport that killed a Penn State Health doctor and injured two Pennsylvania State Police troopers.<\/a><\/p>\n

NTSB aviation accident Investigator Aaron McCarter said investigators are examining three key areas as they work to determine what happened: the people involved, the aircraft and the environment.<\/p>\n

The crash happened shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Cumberland County airport. McCarter said investigators have confirmed that communication was established between the two aircraft before the collision.<\/p>\n

He also provided new details about what the aircraft were doing in the moments before the crash.<\/p>\n

The helicopter crew was conducting a training mission and performing what is known as a hover taxi, a maneuver in which a helicopter moves forward while hovering just a few feet above the ground.<\/p>\n

McCarter said the Cessna approached straight and level before suddenly pitching up, making a left turn and leveling off again before striking the helicopter.<\/p>\n

Investigators have completed their work at the crash site and are now moving the wreckage to Clayton, Delaware, for further examination.<\/p>\n

McCarter said investigators have taken numerous photographs at the scene and will continue examining the aircraft as they work to determine what happened.<\/p>\n

The NTSB is also examining environmental factors, including weather, as part of the investigation.<\/p>\n

A witness reported seeing Sokoloski working on his aircraft before the flight. McCarter said investigators do not yet know what that work involved or whether it played any role in the crash.<\/p>\n

McCarter said a preliminary report with the facts gathered so far is expected within 10 to 15 days. A full factual report will follow in nine to 12 months, with the NTSB’s final report and probable cause expected within 18 months.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"S.
