the two lawmakers sent a letter to the Postmaster General,<\/a>\u00a0urging the USPS to reopen the Post Office and provide updates on its current status and future.\u00a0<\/p>\n\u201cErie residents who do not drive struggle to access alternative post offices, while others report long waits at retail counters to retrieve their rerouted mail. In addition, we are concerned about dangerous conditions at the South Erie Post Office, including missing windows, holes in the pavement, and unhoused individuals sleeping on the premises,\u201d the lawmakers wrote. \u201cUnless the South Erie Post Office reopens soon, residents worry that they will face another holiday season without their local post office,\u201d they added.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Fetterman and Kelly are seeking answers to three important questions:\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat is the status of repairs at the South Erie Post Office? What work has been done so\u00a0far\u00a0and what remains to be completed?\u00a0Will the South Erie Post Office reopen and be fully operational in November 2026?\u00a0Are there plans to permanently close or\u00a0relocate\u00a0services provided by the South Erie Post Office?\u00a0If so, please provide\u00a0additional\u00a0information on these plans.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cOur offices learned that the South Erie Post Office is set to reopen in November 2026, but USPS has not communicated this with the community, and the current condition of the building leaves that timeline in doubt. The Erie community relies on this post office for essential\u00a0services\u00a0and it deserves answers about when services will be restored,\u201d Fetterman and Kelly wrote in the letter.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Momentum to address the issue began months ago, when Erie resident Nick Pallotto\u00a0took\u00a0action. Pallotto\u2019s efforts \u2014 first covered by Erie News Now\u2019s Philip Ward \u2014 resulted in circulated petitions,\u00a0roughly 1,600\u00a0signatures to date, a meeting with Rep. Kelly, and now, the bipartisan, bicameral intervention of the Commonwealth\u2019s top federal policymakers.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Pallotto says\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0all about fighting to restore an essential service that his community deserves.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThey want their service back. It [USPS] may be a quasi-business according to the way\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0set up, but\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0still a service,\u201d said Pallotto. \u201cIf you look at what each of the branches do, it says right on it, \u2018service.\u2019\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0not a total business\u2026 And the federal government is designed to help because\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0the ones in \u201970 that said, go be a business,\u201d Pallotto added.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Pallotto is referring to the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970 \u2014 the law that transformed the Post Office Department into the independent, self-financing U.S. Postal Service in 1971. While the USPS is designed to be self-sustaining, Congress has\u00a0stepped in\u00a0several times over its 55-year history to lend a hand.\u00a0<\/p>\n
It\u2019s\u00a0unclear what type of federal\u00a0assistance\u00a0could be available to address the South Erie Post Office.
