The Draco pad includes miles of drilling, and Erie still owns the mineral rights beneath several small sections of land that extend underneath neighborhoods.

The Erie Town Council had sold the mineral rights to SM Energy for $4.5 million over the summer. The sale would have meant more drilling underneath neighborhoods.

Following the controversial town vote, opponents gathered 1,500 signatures in support of a referendum that would put the sale to voters.

Erie Town Council Member Emily Baer told CBS Colorado that pushback from Erie residents could be part of the reason SM Energy canceled the multimillion-dollar deal.

Many residents who opposed the SM Energy deal said that they did so out of concerns about how drilling might impact the community’s health and safety.

Erie will retain ownership of its mineral rights for the time being.
