SNAP<\/a> to feed their 3-year-old son and provide formula for their 3-month-old daughter.\n<\/p>\nThough people who use SNAP are able to use the credits they received prior to the freeze, Redner\u2019s were stolen last month. She didn\u2019t find out until she reached the cash register at the grocery store, where her SNAP card was declined.\n<\/p>\n
\u201cI just broke down in the grocery store. Everybody saw me cry. I called welfare and they said there\u2019s nothing they can do,\u201d Redner said.\n <\/p>\n
Her family\u2019s only source of income is her husband\u2019s Social Security, which he receives because he lives with a disability that prevents him from working.\n<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was stressful. I started worrying about how I\u2019m getting food, what is [my son] going to eat. I\u2019m not worried about me as long as he eats,\u201d Redner said.\n<\/p>\n
Since then, she\u2019s relied on food pantries to get food on the table. When she saw Swedek\u2019s Facebook post, she signed up to get some support from the community. Over the weekend, a volunteer brought milk, bread, snacks, meat, diapers for the baby and an abundance of meals.\n<\/p>\n
\u201cI was overwhelmed with happiness knowing that there\u2019s food and [my son] can eat and I don\u2019t have to tell him, \u2018You need to wait,\u2019\u201d Redner said. \u201cSo it was like the world came off my shoulders.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
Volunteer Kelly Peters said she\u2019s impressed with the kind of support the community has shown.\n<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople are very interested in meeting their neighbors and helping them with their needs, no matter what walk of life they come from, their economic status, and we all can just bridge that gap and offer a sense of community that makes people feel like your neighbor has your back,\u201d she said. \u201cYou can reach out, you\u2019re not alone in whatever type of place in your life that you\u2019re in.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
