PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) \u2013 While not being numb to the hill they would have to climb, starting Sunday 7.5 games out of a playoff spot, Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said on the Pirates Insider Show with Jason Mackey they have a run in them as to not close the door on the postseason.<\/p>\n
Cherington said if you step back and think about the Pirates roster, with Oneil Cruz and Spencer Horwitz playing and the potential for Konnor Griffin back soon and then Ryan O’Hearn a little later, they could have the best team they\u2019ve had all year in the last month of the regular season.<\/p>\n
The point was also made that most struggling teams even have a long winning streak, but the Pirates haven\u2019t this season. Five games is the longest winning streak of the season, at that was from the last day of March until early April. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe haven\u2019t had a hot streak all year that most teams have,\u201d Cherington said on the Pirates Insider Show with Jason Mackey on 93.7 The Fan. \u201cI think it\u2019s possible we have the best team we\u2019ve had all year. It\u2019s possible, and I think it\u2019s true, we haven\u2019t had a real hot streak. No matter the odds or the standings, I see the potential for a hot streak in September.\u201d<\/p>\n
What if no streak<\/p>\n
The Pirates general manager was also fairly clear about the talk of shutting players down if they don\u2019t find that hot streak. While saying you have to take all information when it comes, it sounds like most players would finish the year if they never get back in the Wild Card race.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe MLB season is a precious thing and we all have a job to do, including the players,\u201d Cherington said on the Pirates Insider Show on 93.7 The Fan. \u201cIf there is a risk not worth taking, we will make adjustments.
