Students from 11 school districts will return to the Erie County Technical School in Summit Township on August 25, and this year they’ll have a brand-new career pathway to explore.<\/p>\n
The technical school is launching its new Heavy Equipment Operator and Mechanic Program, giving students the opportunity to learn how to operate, maintain, and repair the types of heavy machinery commonly used in construction, excavation, and other skilled trades.<\/p>\n
School leaders say the program was developed to help meet the growing workforce needs of local employers who are seeking trained workers with specialized skills. Through hands-on instruction, students will gain experience working with industry-standard equipment while preparing for careers in a high-demand field.<\/p>\n
Interest in the program has been strong, with school officials reporting that the inaugural Heavy Equipment Operator and Mechanic class is already full for the school year.<\/p>\n
The launch of the new program comes as Erie County Technical School continues to expand opportunities for students pursuing career and technical education. Those efforts will also be on display next month during the school’s annual Diggers and Dumpers event.<\/p>\n
Now entering its third year, Diggers and Dumpers gives community members a chance to get up close with heavy equipment and enjoy hands-on activities. Last year’s event attracted more than 1,000 people during the public portion of the program.<\/p>\n
