TAYLOR \u2014 An Aldi food market is going into the former Price Chopper grocery store at 1510 S. Main Ave. in Taylor near the Scranton border, according to an announcement by a real estate firm.<\/p>\n

The Price Chopper closed April 19, 2024, ending a nearly 24-year run at that location atop Taylor Hill. Before Price Chopper opened there, the site previously hosted the former Skateaway Roller Rink.\n<\/p>\n

Bennett Realty & Development LLC of Holmdel, New Jersey, recently announced it closed a real estate lease transaction at 1510 S. Main Ave. in Taylor that will have an Aldi \u201ccoming soon\u201d to that location. The Bennett firm represented the landlord in the lease of space for an Aldi to go there.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are pleased to announce the signing of a lease with Aldi for a portion of the former Price Chopper located at 1510 South Main Avenue in Taylor, \u201c the announcement said.<\/p>\n

The development reflects changes and turnover that occur periodically locally among grocery and retail outlets. The South Main Avenue location is across the street from the Taylor Commons strip mall that has a Wal-Mart and several other stores.<\/p>\n

Aldi will join Planet Fitness, which opened at the Taylor location in December. The shopping center also has the Taylor Beverage & Smoke shop and a state Fine Wine & Good Spirits store next to Planet Fitness. They all remain open as renovation work for an Aldi takes place.<\/p>\n

Aldi has several stores in the region, including in Dickson City, Pittston Twp., Wilkes-Barre, Kingston, Hazle Twp., Pocono Summit, Pottsville and Eaton Twp.<\/p>\n

Price Chopper, and its sister stores Market 32, also operate several supermarkets in the region, including in Dunmore, Wyoming, Wilkes-Barre, Edwardsville, Montrose, Middle Smithfield Twp. and Matamoras.<\/p>\n

The former Price Chopper in Taylor had opened there on May 15, 2000. That was the same day the former West Side Price Chopper on Luzerne Street in West Scranton closed. The West Side Price Chopper dated to the 1980s.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a developer building a Wawa in South Scranton on Moosic Street near Meadow Avenue also had gotten city zoning approval a few years ago to build an Aldi on a rear portion of the Wawa site along Meadow Avenue. Asked about the status of an Aldi to be constructed next to the Wawa, Scranton City Planner Don King said the city now has a permit under review for an AutoZone at that Meadow Avenue location.<\/p>\n

Construction on the Wawa in South Scranton began recently and remains ongoing. Efforts were unsuccessful Monday to reach an Aldi spokesperson and the developer who had gotten zoning approval for an Aldi next to the Wawa.<\/p>\n
