Lander, PA – Measles cases are being reported across Pennsylvania, including in the northwestern part of the state, prompting renewed attention to how the highly contagious virus spreads and what people should know about possible exposure.<\/p>\n
Warren General Hospital says it has not received reports of any measles cases in Warren County, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.<\/p>\n
Locally, Jacquelyn Courim, a Doctor of Nursing Practice and family nurse practitioner at Lander Hope Clinic, said the clinic has received multiple calls from people concerned about possible measles exposure.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe do not know for sure where the outbreak started,\u201d Courim said. \u201cBut we have had multiple phone calls and it could be possible that there may be some unreported cases in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n
Courim said people who believe they may have been exposed and have not been vaccinated or previously had measles should pay close attention to potential symptoms.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you believe you have been exposed to measles and have not had the vaccination or it in the past, you need to look for the signs and symptoms,\u201d Courim said.<\/p>\n
Those symptoms can include a high fever, runny nose, cough and red, watery eyes. Courim said a rash typically follows, beginning on the face and moving down the neck.<\/p>\n
\u201cMeasles is a disease that is exceptionally contagious,\u201d Courim said, adding that the illness can be treated and that the most serious complications are more likely among very young children, older adults and people who are immunocompromised.<\/p>\n
Measles is highly contagious and spreads through the air. The virus can remain infectious in an area even after an infected person has left.<\/p>\n
Health care providers are asking anyone who believes they may have been exposed to measles or who is experiencing symptoms to call ahead before going to a medical office. Calling first allows medical staff to take precautions and helps limit possible exposure to other patients and staff.<\/p>\n
