{"id":272236,"date":"2026-08-26T00:40:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T00:40:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/272236\/"},"modified":"2026-08-26T00:40:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T00:40:12","slug":"philadelphia-gathering-remembers-1619-arrival-of-slaves-in-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/272236\/","title":{"rendered":"Philadelphia gathering remembers 1619 arrival of slaves in America"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Philly and the Pa. suburbs to South Jersey and Delaware, what would you like WHYY News to cover? <a href=\"#Section1\">Let us know!<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>In remembrance of the <a href=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/2026\/08\/24\/philadelphia-presidents-house-slavery-commiseration-exhibit-us-history-timeline\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first documented enslaved Africans arriving in America<\/a>, dozens gathered at the President\u2019s House Site at Independence Mall in Philadelphia on Tuesday.\n<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/000\/arrival-of-the-first-africans-in-1619.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first ship carrying enslaved Africans<\/a> arrived in Virginia on Aug. 25, 1619. An English privateer had captured the Africans from a Spanish slave ship and later traded them to English colonists in exchange for food.\n<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/preshousecoalition\/p\/DcFIZBuOqu_\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Avenging the Ancestors Coalition<\/a> organized the gathering as a \u201csolemn remembrance of those whose forced labor helped build the United States.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p>From a podium set up at 6th and Market streets, attorney Michael Coard spoke to those in attendance about the impact of slavery in America.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImagine you had a company,\u201d Coard said. \u201cAnd for 246 years from 1619 until 1865, you didn\u2019t have to pay your employees a dime. Well, at the end of the day, you\u2019d have a prosperous company too.
