Ukrainians across Erie are marking 35 years of renewed independence, as the local community continues to stand with those affected by Russia\u2019s war against Ukraine.<\/p>\n
On Monday, local Ukrainian leaders gathered at Erie City Hall to receive a proclamation recognizing Ukrainian Independence Day and to thank the community for its continued support.<\/p>\n
For 35 years, Ukrainians have celebrated their independence. This year\u2019s milestone carries added significance as the war with Russia continues.<\/p>\n
Penn State Behrend University professor Dr. Lena Surzhko-Harned reflected on Ukraine\u2019s long journey toward independence after the country declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 amid the Soviet Union\u2019s collapse.<\/p>\n
For Alina Burlakov, the day was also an opportunity to recognize the strong ties between Ukraine and the United States \u2014 and the support Ukrainian families have received from the Erie community.<\/p>\n
More than 2,000 Ukrainians now call Erie home.<\/p>\n
