(WBMA) \u2014 Tuscaloosa City Schools students have made gains in English language arts and mathematics over the past several years, according to the district\u2019s latest Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program results.<\/p>\n<p>The strongest long-term growth was reported at the elementary level.<\/p>\n<p>The school district reported elementary ELA proficiency increased from 42% in 2021 to 65% in 2026, a 23-percentage-point increase. Elementary math proficiency more than doubled over the same period, rising from 21% to 45%.<\/p>\n<p>Middle school students also saw improvement. ELA proficiency increased from 42% in 2021 to 53% in 2026, while math proficiency rose from 15% to 28%.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, TCS students recorded a 54% proficiency rate in ELA in 2026, compared with a statewide rate of 57.1%. In math, TCS had an overall proficiency rate of 35%, slightly above the state average of 34.3%.<\/p>\n<p>Science proficiency in TCS was 39.7%, compared with 47% statewide.<\/p>\n<p>District officials said the results reflect continued efforts to improve classroom instruction and student achievement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know there is more work to do, but this kind of long-term growth shows that our schools are moving in the right direction,\u201d Superintendent Mike Daria said.<\/p>\n<p>District leaders said they plan to build on the recent gains while working to increase proficiency rates across grade levels and subjects.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"TUSCALOOSA, Ala.
