Countryside Floral and Greenhouses is prepared for the late-season rush.<\/p>\n
WAYNE COUNTY, Pa. \u2014 Growers say it’s not too late to keep adding to your gardens even as September is right around the corner.<\/p>\n
Countryside Floral and Greenhouse in Wayne County near Lake Ariel has more than 4,000 mums either growing or ready for your fall planting. Bob Vonderhey, a grower at the farm, says they are ready for what you need.<\/p>\n
“We are full of mums. This is our big draw for the year. We start these in early summer. In the beginning of June, actually. We take care of them all summer, and now they’re just starting to go to people’s houses,” Vonderhey said.<\/p>\n
Vonderhey says they have a variety of flowers this time of season you want to plant, and in the color you want. “We have mums that are flowering now. A lot of these mums are flowering into later September and even October.”<\/p>\n
“People just looking for something fresh for the fall. A lot of summer stuff is starting to die out. This is something that’s coming up nice,” Vonderhey said.<\/p>\n
Mary Wood was shopping for just that, something to spruce up her garden. “I always come down here for my mums and do a big fall decoration outside with like, I have some wooden wagons and wheelbarrows and stuff like that with pumpkins and gourds, of course,” she said.<\/p>\n
She was also looking for some perennials on sale for her raised beds.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Vonderhey says this is their slowest time of year. They expect it to pick up when the calendar turns to September. Mums are cold-resistant and can go into early November some years. They have other plants that are good to buy now.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“People like getting [hydrangeas] planted now. So they have a good amount of time to get rooted in before it gets too cold,” Vonderhey said.<\/p>\n
Vonderhey says it’s smart to plant those grasses before the ground freezes up for the winter.
