The Pittsburgh Steelers have released<\/a> running back Alex Tecza<\/a>, the team announced on Friday. <\/p>\n

Tecza is among the first wave of roster cuts<\/a>. He was with the team for only a short period, signing on Monday.<\/p>\n

The Steelers have until 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 30 to cut their roster down from the 91 players the team carried all offseason to the 53-man limit.<\/p>\n

The Steelers released 11 players on Friday evening, bringing their roster from 91 to 80 players. They still must release 27 more before the Sunday at 6 p.m. deadline.<\/p>\n

Tecza, who was the high school and college teammate of Steelers seventh-round draft pick Eli Heidenreich<\/a> at Mt. Lebanon and Navy, was with the Steelers for a tryout at rookie minicamp this spring, but was not signed to a contract.<\/p>\n

Since then, Tecza had returned to Navy, where he had been serving as a graduate assistant for the football team this summer, while waiting for his military assignment.<\/p>\n

The 6-foot, 199-pound Tecza rushed for 2,228 yards on 408 carries (5.5 average) and 23 touchdowns in his three years at Navy. He also caught 41 passes for 451 yards(11.0 average) and three touchdowns.<\/p>\n

In 2025, Tecza rushed for 902 yards on 158 carries (5.7 average) and a career-high 10 touchdowns. Three of his 13-career touchdown runs were from 60 yards or more.<\/p>\n

Tecza displayed impressive burst at his Navy pro day, running a 4.58 40-yard dash. He is projected to be a running back or fullback in the NFL.<\/p>\n

The Steelers drafted fullback Riley Nowakowski<\/a> in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL Draft, and have used him only sparingly throughout training camp and the preseason. <\/p>\n
