Six pitchers combined on a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts as the Scranton\/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders shut down the Worcester Red Sox for the second straight game in a 9-1 victory Saturday at Polar Park in Massachusetts.<\/p>\n
Marco Luciano and newcomer Jarred Kelenic each had three hits for the RailRiders (31-22, 68-59). Jasson Dominguez and Kenedy Corona added two hits apiece.<\/p>\n
Brendan Beck was scheduled to start for the RailRiders, but when he was brought up by the New York Yankees as the 27th man for their doubleheader Saturday against Boston, it became a bullpen game.<\/p>\n
Hayden Merda started and allowed a single to MLB rehabber Isiah Kiner-Falefa and a RBI single to Mikey Romero that gave Worcester a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. However, Eric Reyzelman (2.2 innings), Chris Kean (1.1), Danny Watson (2.0), Eli Morgan (1.0) and Zach Messinger (1.0) blanked the WooSox the rest of the way on three hits. It followed the combined three-hit shutout performance Friday night by Alexander Cornielle and Bradley Hanner.<\/p>\n
In the top of the second, the RailRiders took the lead for good when Luciano reached on an error and J.C. Escarta hit a two-run home run to right-center field.<\/p>\n
Corona doubled with one out in the top of the fifth. Kelenic, who was signed to a minor-league contract by the Yankees earlier Saturday after being designated for assignment by the Texas Rangers, singled to move Corona to third. With two outs, Dominguez singled to score Corona and send Kelenic to third. Luciano then jumped on the next pitch and homered to left field to put the RailRiders ahead, 6-1.<\/p>\n
Solo runs in each of their final three at-bats finished off the win. Kelenic singled leading off the top of the seventh, stole second, took third on a groundout and scored on a single by Dominguez. Kelenic\u2019s third hit of the game, a two-out single in the top of the eighth, scored Max Schuemann. In the ninth, Oswaldo Cabrera had a RBI single off a position player that scored Anthony Volpe.<\/p>\n
Kelenic, 27, is the former New York Mets top prospect who has played 443 games over six seasons in the majors with the Seattle Mariners, Atlanta Braves, Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers. He has a career batting average of .211 with 50 home runs and 162 RBIs.<\/p>\n
