President Donald Trump<\/a> says he\u2019s holding Canada accountable for \u201cripping off\u201d the United States through unfair trade practices.<\/p>\n But by imposing new tariffs on Canadian goods and prompting retaliation<\/a> from one of America\u2019s largest trading partners, U.S. businesses and consumers could face higher costs, analysts said \u2014 including in key electoral battlegrounds like Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n Pennsylvania sold $13.4 billion in goods last year to Canada \u2014 its largest export market<\/a>. <\/p>\n About $2 billion worth of those goods, or 16%, will be subject to higher tariffs \u2014 some as high as 50% \u2014 starting Sept. 8 after Canada this week announced new levies, according to an Inquirer analysis of trade data. Some of the state\u2019s top exports facing new tariffs include raw aluminum, lumber, and passenger vehicles.<\/p>\n Canadian officials said the tariffs on hundreds of U.S. goods worth a total of $20 billion are meant to protect its workers in response to increased U.S. levies on the same amount of Canadian imports. That affects a relatively small share of trade between the two countries, but analysts said the situation is still evolving. <\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s so many things that go back and forth, some of it multiple times. The effect and the amplification of these tariffs, we\u2019ll definitely feel,\u201d said Lauren Swartz, CEO of the nonprofit World Affairs Council of Philadelphia<\/a>. \u201cWhen we think about what that means for Pennsylvania, it\u2019s going to be loud.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMy sense is the rhetoric that we\u2019re hearing, and the fact that it\u2019s already being labeled a trade war, is that both countries are reserving the right to escalate the level, the percentage of tariffs, as well as the scope of goods that will fall under the new trade war,\u201d she said. \u201cSo it will expand.\u201d<\/p>\n Steel, dairy, electronics impacted<\/p>\n The new tariffs came after talks between the U.S. and Canada over a trade deal fell apart last weekend. Trump imposed 50% tariffs<\/a> on goods such as hockey sticks, national flags<\/a>, and building materials.<\/p>\n \u201cCanada has been ripping off the United States for decades \u2014 and President Donald J. Trump is done letting them get away with it,\u201d the White House said on Tuesday. It said the U.S. had offered Canada \u201cthe most preferential market access of any country on Earth\u201d but that the country chose \u201cunreasonable demands, walk-backs, and flat-out rejection.\u201d<\/p>\n Canada said the proposed terms<\/a> would undermine Canadian interests. <\/p>\n Canadian officials said the country\u2019s counter tariffs would protect the country\u2019s workers and businesses. They said the levies on U.S. goods targeted sectors such as appliances, steel, dairy, and electronics. <\/p>\n Influence on midterms?<\/p>\n The trade dispute could inject new uncertainty into the economy less than three months before the U.S. midterm elections<\/a> decide control of Congress and statehouses around the country. Republicans<\/a> are seeking to retain control of the U.S. House and Senate. Pennsylvania has several competitive House races in which Republican incumbents are seen as vulnerable. <\/p>\n Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro<\/a>, a Democrat who is running for reelection<\/a> against Republican state Treasurer Stacy Garrity<\/a>, has repeatedly criticized Trump\u2019s tariffs.<\/p>\n \u201cDonald Trump\u2019s reckless tariffs are a tax on Pennsylvanians \u2014 and Gov. Shapiro has been fighting back against them from day one,\u201d said campaign spokesperson Manuel Bonder.<\/p>\n \u201cThis President has raised costs for families, screwed over our farmers, and shut down markets for businesses \u2014 all with Stacy Garrity\u2019s 100% support,\u201d Bonder said in a statement. <\/p>\n Garrity\u2019s campaign didn\u2019t respond to requests for comment. She has in the past said Trump\u2019s tariffs could result in some \u201cshort-term pain\u201d but would ultimately bring jobs to America. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be fantastic,\u201d she said in a clip<\/a> that Shapiro\u2019s campaign has highlighted<\/a>.
