{"id":275680,"date":"2026-08-31T10:06:18","date_gmt":"2026-08-31T10:06:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/275680\/"},"modified":"2026-08-31T10:06:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-31T10:06:18","slug":"bryan-kohberger-files-motion-to-disqualify-judge-amid-bid-to-overturn-murder-conviction-poconos-and-coal-region","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/275680\/","title":{"rendered":"Bryan Kohberger files motion to disqualify judge amid bid to overturn murder conviction | Poconos and Coal Region"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bryan Kohberger&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfmz.com\/news\/crime\/bryan-kohberger-seeks-to-withdraw-guilty-plea-in-idaho-student-murders\/article_abd2d606-8584-4541-b926-cc8e4a504bb6.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">attempt to overturn his murder conviction<\/a> is taking a new turn.<\/p>\n<p>Kohberger is currently behind bars for killing four University of Idaho students in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>His new attorneys filed a motion to disqualify the judge overseeing his post-conviction case.<\/p>\n<p>In the motion, Kohberger&#8217;s attorneys say Judge Steven Hippler&#8217;s past comments could call his impartiality into question.<\/p>\n<p>During a hearing last year, Hippler called Kohberger the &#8220;worst of the worst.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The recent request comes after the judge set a pair of hearings for June 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Hippler will consider Kohberger&#8217;s bid to withdraw his guilty plea, which he accepted to avoid the death penalty.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Bryan Kohberger&#8217;s attempt to overturn his murder conviction is taking a new turn.
