The Centers for Disease Control did not include Pennsylvania’s two recent measles-associated deaths on its website page on the disease<\/a>. Instead, the agency said it is reviewing “additional information regarding the circumstances and causes of death” for the two cases. <\/p>\n

Gov. Josh Shapiro announced two measles-associated deaths on Friday, Aug. 28<\/a>, which lead to a back-and-forth between Shapiro and U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/p>\n

The Department of Health said one of those deaths involved an infant. The Lancaster County coroner said a case referred to his office involved a newborn who died shortly after birth and tested positive for measles, but the cause of death was a ruptured spleen.<\/p>\n

Kennedy claimed Wednesday that Pennsylvania wasn’t cooperating as federal officials sought information about the deaths.<\/p>\n

“We’re trying to figure out … who are those deaths, whether they actually happened we can’t figure that out yet,” Kennedy said.<\/p>\n

Shapiro accused Kennedy of going down a “rabbit hole” of conspiracy theories and false claims. Kennedy, in turn, accused Shapiro of fearmongering.<\/p>\n

On the CDC’s website on Monday, the agency said, “This week’s measles outbreaks update will not include the two measles-associated deaths reported by the Pennsylvania Department of Health on August 25 while CDC reviews additional information regarding the circumstances and causes of death. At this time, available information does not establish whether measles caused or contributed to the deaths or whether the individuals died from other causes while infected with measles. CDC will update the national count as additional information becomes available.”<\/p>\n

On the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s website on Monday, officials reported a total of 497 measles cases in the Commonwealth, along with two measles-related deaths. Among the cases reported, 50 have been in Chester County, along with a handful in Montgomery, Berks and Northampton counties, according to Monday’s data. <\/a><\/p>\n

“This is obviously a deeply serious measles outbreak that we are dealing with all across the commonwealth of Pennsylvania and since my comments on Tuesday that you referenced, the situation has gotten much worse,” Shapiro said Friday.<\/p>\n

NBC10’s Lauren Mayk also asked Shapiro on Friday whether Pennsylvania is receiving everything it needs from the federal government to respond to the outbreak.<\/p>\n

“We have received the support that is needed,” Shapiro said. “According to the Department of Health there has been regular communication with the CDC and other federal agencies and if I have any unmet needs that I need from the federal government I will reach out to them and make that request.”<\/p>\n
