Philadelphia\u2019s school selection process this year will begin later than usual as the district waits for state officials to finalize standardized test scores.<\/p>\n

The process will now open on Oct. 5 at 4 p.m. and close on Nov. 24, according to a statement from district officials late on Monday.<\/p>\n

The selective admissions process<\/a> was originally scheduled to open on Sept. 8, Superintendent Tony Watlington told families as much in his back-to-school letter just last week<\/a>. The district\u2019s subsequent decision to postpone the admissions process was done to ensure \u201cfamilies have access to official, verified 2026 assessment data when making their school choices,\u201d according to the district statement.<\/p>\n

Delays in releasing scores from the 2025-26 PSSA and Keystone exams<\/a> have left educators and school leaders scrambling this year, and created uncertainty for families. District officials did receive preliminary PSSA score information in June but have opted not to release those scores to educators and families. Instead, they\u2019re waiting for the state to review and release official results, which officials expect sometime this fall. <\/p>\n

Criteria-based schools in the city usually rely on the most recent PSSA exams as part of their admissions requirements. District officials had previously said students would take an \u201calternative assessment\u201d that could replace the PSSAs. <\/p>\n

Monday\u2019s statement said students will use both their 2025 assessment results and the official 2026 data as part of their applications this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce the verified 2026 PSSA and Keystone results are released \u2026 later this fall, District staff will contact all applicants to assist them with submitting their scores,\u201d the district said. \u201cFamilies do not need to take any action regarding their 2026 assessment scores at this time.\u201d <\/p>\n

There are several other important updates to the selective admissions process this year:<\/p>\n

The district will only consider final grades in English Language Arts (or reading), math, and science. Grades in social studies, writing, or any other class won\u2019t be used to determine a student\u2019s eligibility for school admission. Students who attended the district\u2019s summer career and technical education program will get priority if they are applying to such a program for the 2027-28 school year.ZIP code preference is still a factor in the admissions system<\/a>. Families whose home address is within one of the following eligible ZIP codes may receive priority consideration when applying to Masterman, Central, Carver, and Palumbo: 19132, 19133, 19135, 19138, 19140, 19141. Prekindergarten students seeking to enroll in the same school for kindergarten will get lottery preference.The individualized review process has been expanded. This process is used for students who are English learners and those with disabilities or 504 plans. Those students will receive an individualized review regardless of whether they meet the eligibility requirements for any criteria-based school to which they applied. District officials said this is designed to allow more qualifying students applying to criteria-based middle and high schools to be considered.<\/p>\n
