CUMRU TOWNSHIP, Pa.- Two \u201csuspicious\u201d boys were seen hanging around on school grounds near Mifflin Park Elementary and Governor Mifflin Intermediate School on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n
69 News spoke to Cumru Township Police Chief Madison Winchester, who says the Governor Mifflin School District staff did the right thing by notifying law enforcement quickly.<\/p>\n
“They were not from the area,” says Winchester.<\/p>\n
“They did, in fact, run away, technically ran away in the morning but just decided not to go to school,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Winchester says the students were from the Reading School District and they had three knives and an airsoft gun in a backpack.<\/p>\n
“I can tell you that if that was used in a different manner and pulled, say for example on somebody or in front of an officer, we would have an entirely different situation, more than likely because it was indistinguishable between a real firearm and an airsoft firearm,” says Winchester.<\/p>\n
The Governor Mifflin School District sent out a message to parents letting them know what happened.<\/p>\n
“Rightly so, when a notification is sent from the district to parents, parents are immediately going to be concerned. They’re going to be on high alert, especially from what occurred on Friday night in Shillington,” says Winchester.<\/p>\n
Police say the two incidents are not connected. They say while the juveniles are facing charges associated with the weapons, which are not allowed on school grounds, they do not believe there was a significant threat.<\/p>\n
“We do not feel, as a result of the investigation, that the juvenile males were there for any kind of criminal purpose or intent other than they were somewhere that they shouldn’t be and they had things they shouldn’t have had,” says Winchester.<\/p>\n
