Is Pittsburghese flattening out? <\/p>\n
Some say the region\u2019s heavy accent and dialect have gradually been going away.<\/p>\n
But Dr. Scott Kiesling, a linguistics expert at the University of Pittsburgh, tells the Big K Morning Show that the traditional dialect of Pittsburghese is not disappearing, it’s evolving in response to demographic, economic, and technological changes.<\/p>\n
\u201cFlattening out doesn\u2019t really happen, we really thing that there\u2019s always a dialect and it just changes so, it is definitely changing because that\u2019s what language always does, we always don\u2019t like the way the kids are talking and that\u2019s gone on for generations,\u201d said Dr. Kiesling. <\/p>\n
He adds the heavy accent may be fading among younger generations and white-collar professionals.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe way people say \u2018dahntahn\u2019 or \u2018cahch\u2019 things like that, that seems to be a little less because people are so aware of them and also \u2018yinz\u2019 seems to be less, in terms of actually using it for talking to people, it\u2019s definitely something that people identify with Pittsburgh though,\u201d said Dr. Kiesling.<\/p>\n
He says a similar evolution in linguistics can also be heard in the dialect in Baltimore and Philadelphia as well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Is Pittsburghese flattening out?
