tragedy struck.<\/a><\/p>\n“I just came to Nepal for, like, just two weeks to take care of my mom and to be with her. And August 25th is the day we heard the news that my brother was one of the affected persons in that landslide\/flood,” said Shrestha.<\/p>\n
Saroj’s brother Niraj is a civil engineer who was working on a hydroelectric plant in the area affected by the landslide.<\/p>\n
Saroj says witnesses have told him that the building his brother was in is still intact, just covered in mud and debris.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“We have been telling the Nepalese government, we have our brother, I think he’s alive,” he said. “Just in a narrow space, he could be alive. It’s a big building, and the building has not swept away. It’s been seven days; we’ve been begging. I’ve been so frustrated with the slow rescue process.”<\/p>\n
He described Niraj as quiet and kind, dedicated to his family and career. There could be 44 others in the building with him.<\/p>\n
The Shrestha family is holding out hope for a miracle for his brother and the dozens possibly trapped with him.<\/p>\n
“It’s so hard, I have a mom who is going through the terminal brain cancer, and what should I tell her? Right? So, we need closure. And I have a sister-in-law who is going through denial, a range of emotions, and my dad, who is 81. So, they’re all going through this agony of pain, not knowing what’s going on,” said Shrestha.<\/p>\n
They’re also calling on the Nepalese government to accept help from foreign governments and agencies willing to help with search and rescue efforts, and for the government in the U.S. to send more aid.<\/p>\n
The U.S. government has sent just over $3.5 million so far.<\/p>\n
