As the reopening of the Bayfront Parkway and State Street approaches, the PennDOT is alerting motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to significant traffic pattern changes tied to the next phase of the Central Bayfront Parkway Improvement Project.<\/p>\n
The upcoming phase will focus on construction of the project’s dual-lane hybrid roundabout at Holland Street and completion of a concrete median along the Sassafras Street Extension. The work marks another major step in the ongoing effort to improve traffic flow and connectivity between downtown Erie and the waterfront.<\/p>\n
Construction crews will begin work on Sassafras Street Extension by removing the temporary asphalt currently in place and installing new curb gutters and a concrete median between the Bayfront Parkway and Front Street. The work is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete.<\/p>\n
During that time, motorists traveling to businesses located north of the Bayfront Parkway will be directed to use Front Street for access. Meanwhile, the City of Erie is expected to reopen Sassafras Street south of the parkway in conjunction with the reopening of State Street.<\/p>\n
Traffic impacts will also be significant near Holland Street as roundabout construction gets underway. The initial stage of work will focus on the downtown side of the intersection, requiring the closure of Holland Street between the Bayfront Parkway and Second Street.<\/p>\n
As a result, motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians will be detoured via Third Street and State Street. Drivers should anticipate delays and allow additional travel time while crews complete this portion of the project.<\/p>\n
PennDOT also announced a traffic pattern shift on the Bayfront Parkway between State Street and Holland Street. Westbound traffic will be reduced to a single lane adjacent to Holland Street, while eastbound traffic will be restricted to one lane beginning at the Sassafras Street Extension.<\/p>\n
Pedestrian detours currently in place throughout the corridor will remain active as work continues on the project’s multi-use trail system.<\/p>\n
PennDOT is reminding motorists to use caution when traveling through construction zones. Drivers are encouraged to reduce speeds, remain alert for changing traffic patterns, avoid distractions, and follow the directions of posted signs and flaggers.<\/p>\n
