WATERFORD, N.Y. (WNYT) \u2013 From history to adventure, the Erie Canal <\/a>has long been a symbol of New York\u2019s heritage \u2013 and this time, I decided to experience it in a whole new way: by kayak.<\/p>\n In the latest edition of Tamara Tries<\/a>, I took on the challenge of paddling one of the state\u2019s most scenic and historic waterways and discovered that the canal offers more than just a trip through history.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re standing at the confluence of the Hudson and the Mohawk rivers on the Erie Canal,\u201d said Jackie Schillinger, spokesperson for the New York State Canal Corporation<\/a>. \u201cFrom here, you can go anywhere in the world \u2013 from New York City to Montreal, to Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n Stretching hundreds of miles, the canal connects New York City to Canada through the Champlain Canalway Trail and extends west from Albany to Buffalo along the historic Erie Canalway.<\/p>\n For Donna Larkin, owner of Upstate Kayak Rentals<\/a>, each trip down the canal brings something new.<\/p>\n \u201cIt never gets boring,\u201d she said. \u201cThe wildlife, the peacefulness, the tranquility \u2013 connecting with nature.\u201d<\/p>\n I admit, I was very nervous at first \u2014and I can\u2019t swim \u2014so kayaking quickly turned into a journey of confidence and connection. Guided by Larkin\u2019s tips, I learned how to navigate the locks safely and share the water with boaters.<\/p>\n \u201cWe kayak close to the shorelines and out of the middle of the boating channels,\u201d Larkin explained. \u201cIt\u2019s a very safe way to explore our waterways.\u201d<\/p>\n After completing my adventure, I couldn\u2019t help but celebrate the journey with amazing people at the access port in Waterford.
