The 30th Annual Philadelphia Fringe Festival<\/a> is kicking off with a month-long lineup of more than 350 productions and experiences across the city.<\/p>\n

Running Sept. 8 to 27, the festival annually brings together local and international artists for a celebration of experimental, progressive and boundary-pushing work designed to challenge expectations and expand the imagination.<\/p>\n

Big names, bold premieres<\/p>\n

Fringe this year will feature a dynamic mix of premieres<\/a>, immersive performances, dance, theater, comedy and participatory works. Among the highlights is the Philadelphia premiere of ‘Kramer\/Fauci’, conceived and directed by Daniel Fish, which revisits the explosive 1993 televised exchange between AIDS activist and playwright Larry Kramer and researcher Dr. Anthony Fauci.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Several world premieres will also spotlight the work of Philadelphia artists.<\/p>\n

According to a release, Nichole Canuso\u2019s \u2018Lunar Retreat\u2019 will transform the Pearlstein Gallery into an interactive, multisensory environment inspired by the moon\u2019s gradual retreat from Earth, inviting audiences to reflect on connection, loss, care and transformation. Ninth Planet\u2019s \u2018The Holy Fool\u2019 uses dance-theater, music, and a dreamlike cinematic aesthetic to examine family, aging, grief and the pressures of conformity. Meanwhile, The Bearded Ladies Cabaret\u2019s \u2018Priority Hoarding: A Retrospectacle\u2019 will turn the company\u2019s Hairport into an immersive installation filled with 16 years of accumulated \u201cbaggage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Additionally, comedy and audience participation take center stage in Julia Masli\u2019s \u2018Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha\u2019, a Philadelphia premiere directed by Kim Noble. The award-winning solo performance combines clowning, improvisation and spontaneous audience interaction to create a different experience each night. In Ontroerend Goed\u2019s \u2018Handle with Care,\u2019 on the other hand, the entire performance arrives in a box, with spectators determining how the experience unfolds.<\/p>\n

The street is the stage<\/p>\n

The festival will also bring performance directly into Philadelphia\u2019s streets. ‘Blank Placard Dance, Replay,<\/a>‘ by Anne Collod and Sherwood Chen (based on Anna Halprin\u2019s 1967 work), will send a silent procession carrying blank protest signs through Center City, inviting passersby to decide what they would protest. Or with ‘Let Freedom Ring’, visitors can complete the final note of ‘My Country \u2019Tis of Thee’ by ringing a 600-pound bell.<\/p>\n

Other Philadelphia premieres include ‘Friday Night Rat Catchers<\/a>‘ by Lisa Fagan and Lena Engelstein, an increasingly dark dance-theater piece that begins as a 1970s-style game-show fantasy before descending \u201cinto something far stranger.\u201d At the Franklin Institute\u2019s Fels Planetarium, locals can also catch Theater Mitu\u2019s ‘Utopian Hotline,’ which combines different mediums to imagine what humanity might want to communicate to the future.<\/p>\n

The curated lineup concludes with the world premiere of ‘How does it feel to look at nothing’, an elemental new opera by Holland Andrews and yuniya edi kwon that draws on experimental music, Korean shamanic ritual, punk, queer performance and improvisation.<\/p>\n

Hubs of creativity\u00a0<\/p>\n

Beyond the curated lineup, more than 300 independently produced works will take over theaters, unconventional venues, and unexpected spaces throughout Philadelphia with the Fringe Festival’s Hubs.<\/a><\/p>\n

Returning iterations\u2014including Cannonball, Circus Campus Presents, Dumb Hub, and Studio 34\u2014will once again create unexpected centers for performances and community. The Lemonade Stand (new this year) will also spotlight emerging artists and fresh work, and the Performance Garage will establish a dedicated home for dance and theater within its historic 1865 building. The best part? Each hub will host more than a dozen experiences.<\/p>\n
