The agencies jointly hired the Wildlife Management Institute, a nonprofit conservation organization, to assess ways they could remain financially sustainable long term.

The study projects that both commissions will spend more than they take in over the next 10 years. By fiscal year 2034, the Game Commission could draw down 95% of its reserves, while the Fish and Boat Commission could exhaust its reserves entirely.

The report did not call for a merger of the two agencies, but it outlined possible changes aimed at saving money. It also noted staffing pressures and included recommendations to cut deputy positions in both organizations, which both agencies did just weeks ago.

Pennsylvania is the only state with separate, independent commissions for fish and wildlife. While other states have combined those responsibilities under one agency, the study does not recommend a merger in Pennsylvania. Instead, it recommends the state consider shared services, fewer field offices and a unified law-enforcement structure. Researchers estimate those changes could save about $34 million a year.

The executive director of the Pennsylvania Game Commission said the agency wanted to complete the study now while it was still in a good financial position, adding, “This robust report warrants meticulous review and in-depth communication with our constituents, our board of commissioners, legislators, stakeholders and the Fish and Boat Commission.

PENNSYLVANIA (WJAC) — Two of Pennsylvania’s key conservation agencies are facing mounting financial pressure over the next decade,…

[6
28,30,29
post-277820","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-pennsylvania","tag-pennsylvania","tag-pennsylvania-headlines","tag-pennsylvania-news
["GET
