9\/4; 9:15 a.m.\u2014Five juveniles have been charged after a video showing an assault near the Erie Canal in Rome was widely shared on social media.<\/p>\n

According to the Rome Police Department, the assault happened Aug. 26 near the Erie Canal.<\/p>\n

Police said they identified, located and charged the five juveniles on Sept. 2.<\/p>\n

All five face charges of assault.<\/p>\n

Police are not releasing their names or other identifying details because of their ages.<\/p>\n

8\/28; 4:10 p.m.\u2014Rome\u00a0Mayor Jeffrey Lanigan has issued the following statement on the incident:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe violence depicted in the video circulating on social media is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our community.<\/p>\n

“Rome is a community that believes in safety, respect, and accountability. I commend the Rome Police Department for taking swift action, and I am confident they will continue to pursue this investigation and hold those responsible accountable.<\/p>\n

“Our city\u2019s message is clear that violence has no place in Rome, and those who engage in it will be held accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n

8\/28; 10:10 a.m.\u2014A person was arrested after a viral video spread on social media.<\/p>\n

The Rome Police Department reported making the arrest on Aug. 27.<\/p>\n

Damaris Brane, 35, was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.<\/p>\n

RFD stated that “Brane is the mother of two of the juveniles seen in the video attacking the victim.”<\/p>\n

Police are trying to speak with the male victim involved.<\/p>\n

Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.<\/p>\n

ROME, N.Y. — The Rome Police Department is investigating an assault involving a male victim that was reportedly recorded and posted to social media.\u00a0<\/p>\n

RPD said it was alerted to the video on Aug. 26 “that appears to show a group of individuals assaulting a male victim.”<\/p>\n

Police believe the incident to have happened in the area of the Erie Canal in the City of Rome.\u00a0<\/p>\n

RPD is investigating and is asking anyone who saw the assault, knows those involved, or has more video or information to contact the Rome Police Department TIP Line at 315-339-7744.<\/p>\n
