{"id":279144,"date":"2026-09-04T18:32:08","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T18:32:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/279144\/"},"modified":"2026-09-04T18:32:08","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T18:32:08","slug":"flight-93-artifacts-displayed-in-pennsylvania-state-capitol-harrisburg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/279144\/","title":{"rendered":"Flight 93 Artifacts Displayed in Pennsylvania State Capitol | Harrisburg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pieces from Flight 93 are on display in the Pennsylvania state capitol this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s 25 years, which is hard to believe it\u2019s been that long,\u201d said Taylor Mason, outreach archivist for the Pennsylvania House Archives. \u201cYou know, [this is] keeping it in the forefront of everyone\u2019s memory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/How-many-people-were-killed-in-the-September-11-attacks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">September 11, 2001<\/a>, two planes flew into the world trade centers, killing 2,753 people. Another plane flew into the Pentagon, killing 184. A third plane, Flight 93, was hijacked with intention to fly into the U.S. Capitol building\u2013 but the 40 people on board attempted to regain control of the plane, and the hijackers instead crashed outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pennsylvania House Archives recently set up four display cases, honoring lives lost in flight 93, and those who served in the aftermath.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The archives worked with the National Park Service for similar displays in 2021, and Mason says the good working relationship from earlier allowed for another exchange this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On loan from the National Park Service, the artifacts range from patches of investigators, to a pack of M&amp;Ms left for Todd Beamer\u2013 the man who rallied passengers to take back the plane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur last case features some original pieces from the flight 93 plane itself,\u201d Mason said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These include a flight attendant\u2019s emergency call button, fragments of American Airline headphones, and-<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are pieces of silverware. This is one of our more moving pieces we\u2019ve ever displayed down here,\u201d Mason said. \u201cThese are pieces that flew out of the plane upon impact and actually got embedded in trees and wrapped around branches and were actually like stuck in the wood itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAQAAAADCAQAAAAe\/WZNAAAAEElEQVR42mM8U88ABowYDABAxQPltt5zqAAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==\" alt=\"silverware flight 93\" class=\"img-responsive lazyload full default\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" data- data-\/><\/p>\n<p>                                    By Kara Jeffers<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cases are easy to find, located in a place convenient for all to see and pause to observe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe East Wing Rotunda is a major hub in the capitol complex.. so there\u2019s a lot of public visitation, but also a lot of members and staff.
